Fuel Additives

Every time I'm in Pep Boys or Wal Mart or whatever, I always see all theese fuel additives (fuel injector cleaner, octane booster, etc.). I've always stayed away from them because my godfather was a mechanic for most of his life and never seemed to care for any of them, but do any of them actually work? I know everybody here is in live with Sea Foam, but what about the other stuff out there?

Nah, none of 'em are really necessary nor worth a flip. Gasolines nowadays have all the detergents and cleansers in 'em you need to keep your fuel system squeaky clean. In the event that the fuel system does need a through cleaning, there's specialized products available like the Motorvac and BG systems that do a lot better job of anything you can dump in the fuel tank.

only thing i use that works as an additive is acetone and use only 1 oz per 10 gallons more is not better... all it does is releives the chemical tension that all the alcohol gives gasoline.. and the oil companies put alcohol in it so gasoline wont burn as efficiently and so ur use more of it.. acetone does work!

Faster150,

I just had a conversation with my buddies dad that had a friend that swore by adding acetone to his gas tank. Long story short, I basically said no way becuase that is what my mom takes her fake fingernails off with. But I guess I am now convinced to try it.

Another question to add to this thread.

I have heard a couple people who have sworn by adding techaron to their tanks. They have said once they add it to a vehicle it slighly increases fuel efficiency, and overall it just makes the engine run cleaner/smoother. Has anyone had any experience with Techaron? I know Cheveron adds it to their gas, but that is about all I know about the additive.

Everybody always talks about how much better their truck idles etc. after using additives. Well my truck runs perfect! It's not gonna idle any smother than it already does, so why bother?

i would definitely stay away from Acetone.
aside from eating the rubber in the fuel lines, it was shown to have no positive effect and actually a slight negative effect when tested on myth busters.

the only additive i ever use is octane booster, in the stang where its actually needed.

the big varyiance in that is fuel grade in ur local area. but as long as u dont pour it straight in like premix it in a 1 or 5 gallon container u are fine. but i found for fuel in my area 1 oz or less of 100% acetone will help.. hell we made kerosine'd gas usable with enough acetone. didnt run it in my truck but we did in a lawn mower and pressure washer.
