Engine rattle when towing uphill

I have a 96 F150 V8 that I am using to pull a ultralight 25ft. 3000lb camper. Everything seems fine except when pulling uphill or a grade I have a good amount of what seems to be valve rattle or some sort of other rattling noise in my engine. No temp problems. I am burning 87 octane. Any ideas on what noise is and how to reduce it?

This is one of the few times I'd suggest higher octane fuel.

Sounds like ping/knock under load. The higher octane will likely help.

I used to do this when towing my boat with my old 93 Exploder. The high octane when towing was helpful in my case.

Try running some Techron or SeaFoam through it.

check base timing, and if possible the knock sensor circuit. It was designed to run without spark knock on 87 but sometimes it is just easyer to run a higher octane of fuel.

Check your timing. Other than that, 89 octane will probably help a lot.

Higher octanes burn slower, so it helps give the piston some time to get over TDC in your case.....

Id say its ping also....Go to 89 ethanol....Its cheaper than 87 and will most likely solve your problem.

I had a similar rattle in my 99 Explorer. Under moderate acceleration or when going up grade I would get a rattle. The only thing on mne was there was a TSB on a timming chain tension bracket that would fix it on my 4.0 engine but I was over the millage to do it for free. Had over 100,000 when I traded it and still ran great.
