'01 Expedition starts when it wants to

I've got an '01 Expedition and a few months ago the damn thing wouldn't start. It would just crank and crank but not fire. We decided to tow it to a shop a few miles down the road. A couple hours went by why we made some arrangements for another vehicle and we came back to the expedition ready to tow. I figured it was worth a shot to see if she fired up and sure enough, it did. It ran perfect until yesterday.

Early morning yesterday the Expedition starts the same crap. I wait six or so hours and try again. It cranks for a couple seconds then fires right off. I start it again just to make sure and it starts normally. I then wait a couple more hours before I headed for the store. I jump in and turn the key. It just clicks like the battery is low. I doubt the battery is low because after all that cranking I let the truck idle for 10 minutes or so.

In both cases when the Expedition would not start, the odometer was not working. Instead of digits, it had bars. I'm hoping this is clue what is going on.

While I do not know what the answer is I would be very interested in the answer myself. We have a 95 Mazda B2300 which has done the same thing for 6 mo. now (the reason why I got my 03 F150 XL). There are times when I can turn it off and on all day having to run errands around town and local area without ever a problem, then the next day I can't make it start. We have taken it to 3 different Mazda mechs and all of them can find nothing wrong with it. Anyways not my problem anymore I love my Ford and dad can use his wind up toy (mazda) when he gets home off the road LOL
