Please excuse the ignorance of the question, but just what are e-fans? How do they improve performance? Are there any negatives to them? Thanks, all.

 

I think that term is used in reference to electric fans. They improve performance because they don't rob engine horse power, they are run by electric motors. And they don't have to run all the time, like the fan on your engine, they just come on when the water temp gets up. I don't know how much power they will give you. I doubt it would be much, because if it was, Ford would put them on the truck from the factory.

actually you gian a desent amount of power by removing the clutch fan and adding electric fans. I have an 01 f-150 and i installed a duel fan set up from a 97 dodge strattus and a themostatic controller from advance auto ,all for about $120. I also gianed about 2-3 mpg .

 

I looked at doing this to my truck but some people say up to 5 mpg, some say none.....

It'd take a lot at 1-2 mpg (which is what most people say they gained) to pay the added $$ of buying a good electric fan. I know I probably could have done it with a junkyard setup but depending on your truck any electric fan MAY require a bigger alternator, which adds to the cost. Factoring that in, it just wasn't worth it to me. You might be different.

SO, to answer your question, it depends.

In the end, I finally decided to go with the original fan clutch because it was easier, cheaper, and because it works and I know it works. I live in Phoenix-- it's not uncommon to have 115 degree days here in the summer, I don't have the leeway some people do when it comes to cooling.

in your case get one of the nylon flexalite fans that weigh lik 8oz they are only about 40 bucks and it will drop about 4lbs off the stock fan if it is plastic the metal ones are about 8-9 lbs

I installed e-fans on my 01 Screw and gained up to 2mpg on the highway. 18.75mpg at a steady 65mph FWIW. Not bad for a 5000 truck that was packed with people and stuff.

Plus your engine will rev faster and you'll gain a few HP that was lost to the cluth type fan through paracitic loss.
