Choice of Cam for 302

Sorry for the topic, I know this has to have been discussed before, but I think the word cam is too small for the search to work...if there is a way to search this, please point it out...

Anyway, I am looking to rebuild my 302 in my 1990 truck. I have a Mustang shortblock (roller). I will be doing some towing of a race car, so am looking for a little more power. I know the stock Mustang cam puts out more power and torque than the F-150 cam...Is the power band too high? I am looking to keep the rebuild cheap, so I do not want to convert to Mass air....

What cams do you recommend?

Please give input on a Mustang GT Speed Density cam if you have it...

If you want to keep speed density, gain torque, still have smooth drivability, and not have to make any other changes, I would go with F4TE-6250-BA. It's a truck 302 cam, but it's got the HO firing order, and is much more aggressive than any other truck cam.

Other Cam Specs

Thanks for the reply. The part number allowed me to find a site that had some cam specs.

http://www.scoa.org/legacy/info/camsheads.htm

The Explorer cam is .422/.448 with duration 256/266 lobe separation 116

The Mustang cam I have is .444/.444 with duration 266/276 and lobe separation of 115....

The Mustang cam is a little more for higher RPM....Thanks again!!!

Anyone else have other cam recomendations? I am all about research to see what has worked....

In a truck that doubles as a hauler, torque is more important than hp, and you want it at a lower rpm.

Which cam do you have, E5ZE-6250-AA? That's the only 5.0 HO SD roller cam I'm aware of (stock), but it's got the same duration on int. and exh. (266). If you want to hot rod it, put the GT-40 cam in it (F3ZE-6250-CA).

The Explorer cam sucks - I have an Explorer and I have been waiting for an excuse to open it up and change cams. The Mustang cams will give up too much torque in a truck application.

Stick with something that has a 205-210 degree duration at .050 lift. That will give a good strong lower and mid-range power gain.

i would leave the mustang cam in and call it a day (if the speed density will tolerate the extra duration on the intake side)

Changing Directions....

Thanks for the input...the cam that I have to put in the roller block is the E5ZE-6250-AA.
I am now contemplating keeping it flat tappet...It doesn't matter to me, I can do either...whatever works for a reasonable price....

I have found a reasonable cam...The Melling MTF-1. ithad 0.050 of 204 Int/214 exh anf lift of .448 and.472. It is advertised as a truck cam until 1985...anyone try this on the EFI trucks?

Thanks again...I will get there....the block and heads are going to the machine shop for some work.

Another thought

I also have Edelbrock 6037 heads that were for a Mazda Miata 5.0 conversion...the plans for that went south, but I have the heads. Is it worth me putting them on the truck instead of reworking the stock heads? I am thinking I could sell them with the roller rockers for maybe $700-$800 (that is more than I am thinking the rebuild will cost me )

Thanks again!
