4.9's revaphobia

i am soon to aquire a '93 F-150 XL Standard Cab SB 4speed +OD, thats been bored out and is in excellent condition from a relative of mine. From what i've heard, and what my experiance driving it has told me, the thing pretty much stops accelerating at around 3.9-4k. so im asking if there's anything i can add or remove from the truck for a relativly low amount of $$$, that will imrove the higher end performance. the thing is completly stock, except for the over bore and i am new to inline 6's.
thanx.

I Haven't drove an inline 6 myself so i dont know how high your engine revs to. Is it acting wierd? I mean a noticable loss of power or could it be just the engine topping out in its powerband?

My 351 only revs to about 4000-4500 rpms then shifts.

Stock - the i-6 only have aprox 160hp and 250 ftlb of torque. The rear axle is geared low for towing. They were never ever intended for speed or high revs, kind of like a diesel. Because of the low hp and low revs those motors usually see high mileage and very long life. You wont go very fast but you sure can yank a moble home off its blocks. Google ford inline 6 forums, you will be suprised what you will find.

I had a 96 f150 with a 4.9l Inline 6. I had true dual exhaust installed because it had a split manafold (no cats), home fabricated K&N Intake, Throttle Body spacer, MSD Ignition and a Hypertec Chip. After all the mods that inline beast came alive.

The exhaust Manafold. Early 4.9l Had a single manafold. when I say split manafold I mean that thier are two. So you could true duals if you wanted to without headers.

The basic mods of exhaust, intake, and a chip should wake it up, but it will only help you get up to 4,000 rpm quicker, and then it will still fall on it's face, but just not as far of a fall

ok so for intakee im guessing a cone filter, but for exhaust iv'e heard that on many cars, removing the cat(s) (which is the first thing id do) will decrease lowend performance of the motor, also are there ne sensors after the cat(s) that will be affected? as far as a chip goes, does anyone know where i can get one for a '93? and what about new injectors?

b.t.w. we dont have emissions testing or inspections down here in FL and i know the cops around here, and they dont care about such things, not trying to be mean but please dont tell me i can get big time fined for it or nething cuz i know, and im not trying to get neone here to sanction tampering w/ emmisions control stuff.
thanx

Hey Calisonic I had a 96 F150 4.9L and I bought a chip from Hypertec. I live in Plant City, FL where we used to have emmissions testing.

For intake: Go with a K&N FIPK, not just the airfilter.
For the exhaust: Get whatever you think sounds good. Period.
For the chip: I'm thinking that your options will be limited, but I think that Jet or Hypertech had a chip for the I6. And I think there was a "stage 2" chip that required intake, exhaust, and low temp thermostat.

96 was the first year for OBDII so it won't work on pre96s which were OBDI.

fuel filter

if you put in a new fuel filter, it should run at the highest rpms the truck can. also air filter. with those 2 things, the truck should be able to reach the max stock potential
