13,500 miles on 04
Hello to All, As you can see I have low miles on my truck, never the less. I am very frustrated with my truck clunking. It seems that the clunking/banging (from a stop, upshifting and downshifting, unforgiving bang at times)(It has never happened on turns, so I think I can cross off the clutch packs) on my truck is really starting to kick in this week. So I am going to the dealer in hopes that the greasing will work. But it seems it is only a temp. fix. (search on slip yoke shows that to be true) So my question is will a new drive shaft work (05-06 model shaft), why does it, is it seating further inside the slip yoke. Preventing that perfect angle to bind/clunk when the driveshaft needs to move in or out (that clunk being the release of the bind inside the slip yoke)? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated............

My dad has the same symptoms and the guy said it was "normal" It is not normal and now he as 40K on his ride and worried that the Tranny is gonna fall out anytime. He's gonna be trading it in soon on a Chebby. He had an Old 92 silverado that is still running strong with 200K miles. He is set on the Chebbys. I talked him into the Ford and now he's throwin it in my face. I cant wait for him to trade it in. Im trading his painted bumpers for my chrome bumpers and then getting my bottom paint painted brown to match. Then some Lariat rims and tires (hopefully the 20's) and then I got a Reg Cab Lariat look a like.
F150 clunking
It sounds like you and I may have the same problem. I have an 04 F150 that has about 19,000 miles. I have had this truck into the dealership three times to repair a clunking noise and a jolting motion upon ecceleration from a stop. The pickup jolts and clunks twice just like both front and rear tires are running over a cable in the road. The first repair trip I was shocked when the guy at the counter told me that all the F150s do this and they may not be able to fix the problem. They added fluid to the rear differencial and that helped but not for long. The second trip they adjusted the drive shaft pinion angle and that helped but not for long. The third trip they replaced the driveshaft which helped but I still think it is clunking slightly and I am expecting it to get worse, just like before.
Thanks for the reply's. Over the weekend I went under the truck to inspect the drive-line my self. What I found was interesting. I started at the rearend and made my way forward. Once I got to the u-joints before the spline, I see something. Black dust all over them. I look a bit further and there is the culprit. The driveshaft spline where it enters the slip-yoke is all but covered in black dust. I twist the driveshaft nothing unusual. I then push straight up towords the trucks underside. The driveshaft angle moves a good 3/16 inch and stops with "clunk". Seems to be extra play in the union between the spline and the yoke? I do this a few times. I could increase the loudness of the "clunk" by moving the drive-shaft harder. It is dry as a friggin bone. No doubt, this is the problem area. I am concerned that the damage has been done already? Yes, no? I am sure all they will do is grease the spline and yoke. Sounds like the drive shafts needs to be changed... I am not going to let this go easy, no way... Thanks...
