my 5.4 keeps getting its *** handed to it by a coworkers stock 05 Tacoma 2wd xtracab v6, although he has had no probs with the 5.3 chevy's either or even a hemi quad cab he ran against. Its probably in the gearing and light weight of the Tacoma.

they dont offer the s/c on em anymore i dont think. to many engine reliability problems... unless they paid extra and had one put on... i think the scion TC is the only yota u can get a s/c on now.but hell even the 4.7L dohc tacoma's were slow compared to my sohc 4.6L those v8's were such dogs... and so unefficient.... also massive drivetrain problems. im curious how well their 5.7L v8 is going to do in the new tacoma's

If the 4.6L was such an awesome motor and the 5.4 had to do alllll of this just to "make up for its shortcomings" then why dont they do all the great stuff to the 4.6l, if its so much better?

Well I dont know what changed since 04 cause according to this test the F150 was slower then even the Tundra.

http://trucktrend.com/roadtests/pick...ff/index8.html

I only found a few tests of the tacomas but it looks like its 0-60 is in the mid 7's so its no wonder I get walked when mine is over 9 if the roads tests are an indication of my performance. I guess I need to shed some weight and add some hp so I wont get walked by stock 6 banger mini trucks.

the 03/04 cobra was the fastest street car for under 30K. the lincoln mark 8 was one of the fastest luxury cars for many years. the crown victoria is one of the most reliable cars on the market... if not then police wouldnt have been using them since 1991. and the mustang gt is one of the best selling and lasting muscle cars. all of these have the 4.6L in it... ohh and the 4.6L has always had the most track records for speed not the 5.4.....

Because they are cars. Youd be hard pressed to fit a 5.4L into most cars, hence why you see them in trucks, which are HEAVIER than cars, and so you dont see high speeds.

Are you comparing the ford car motor to the truck motor or what? Cause yea after looking the 5.4 makes less then the in the dohc that was in mustang.

[QUOTE=99fordman]I think you guys need to take a ride in my truck before you go and call all 5.4 slow I've got a 99 f-150 5.4l supercab shortbox 4x4 4r70w trans. My truck will smoke newer Chevys and Dodge hemis. Matter of fact I just lined up with my buddy's 02 tahoe with the 5.3l and 50,000 less miles than my truck and I smoked the **** out of it with my 35's on. So you can call your 5.4s slow but mine sure isn't.

I think I'm gonna have to call bullsh_t on that one!

there is plenty of room under the hoods to fit the 5.4L it is only half an inch taller of a motor.. and comes out to about 2 inches wider.

i am just was stating that the f150 i own is a pig. i wanted to know if it is the norm for the 05 . we had an elantra (hyundi) that would do a lot of shifting and not a lot of moving....this truck reminds me of it. sorry to offend anyone with a 5.4. i am going togeta programmer hopefully this will wake it up.

The reason they use the 5.4 is a very simple one. There is NO replacement for displacement or if you prefer, NO substitute for cubic inches (for you metric heads "litres"). The bigger the hole the more you can stuff into it.

my advice to all 04+ is to lose the pcm and convert to 99-01 cobra pcm/harness/fuel system and never look back. i'm telling you this crate runs like hell to 5700. it may pull farther, but im keeping it together. i don't have any of the powertrain saving features of the truck pcm. i'm going to the track this weekend, and i'll let you know, but i fully expect i have more power than a 99 4.6 4v cobra. and i am short a little because the 4.6 inlet elbow and 65mm throttle body is hurting me a little. they are on there only for baseline run. next time to the track the 05 T/B i modified for cable manual operation is going on. it is going to be worth 10+hp.
