Navi 5.4L dohc swap in 98 with 4.6

Ok i've read alot about guys doing it in the 99+ f150's and expys, but what about the earlier model f150's (97-98)? Will it be just as simple or will the entire wiring harness be needed from a 99+?

Also where can i get a slightly used navi motor, ebay wants $2500+

same idea

i was doing a little research myself lastnight, and i found that lincoln, had a DOHC 4 valve motor, which obviously had potential to produce a lot of horsepower. I also noticed that the block is a cast iron block, not aluminum. I have heard that cast iron works great with forced induction (turbos and superchargers etc.). I was wondering if anyone had heard of putting a roots type supercharger on one of these motors. How much Boost could you run on it? I would preferablly run kenne bell or a whipple twin screw charger, because i am familiar with them. Please give me some feedback.

no 5.4L do not have great potential to build HP. since the motor doest not safely handle over 5252 RPM. unlike the 4.6L that rev's higher and since HP is a mere calculation of torque throughout the RPM. then the 5.4 will never make as much HP as the 4.6L will. but yes the 5.4 will make more torque but not more HP.

4.6L DOHC then

I am also aware that they make a DOHC 4.6 and i belive that this is also 4 valves per cylinder as well. Would this be ideal for high output, i know that ford used 3.4L V8 in the old SVO Taurus that was DOHC and i think again it was 4 valve. what would be the best motor to use in making a fast truck.

If you are going to Supercharge the engine the 5.4 Navi, which is Lincoln btw, will be a great starting point. I would take a 5.4 over the 4.6 anyday. If you build it right you can spin the 5.4 to 6500. Besides if you are going to forced induction you don't have to spin it that fast to make the power. Mod for mod the 5.4 will kick the 4.6's **** for power.

well basically, i was thinkin there was no replacement for displacement, i figured they used 5.4 for the new ford GT, the SVT Lightning, and the 2001 cobra R, so i figured that it would be a better motor. I was also aware that lincoln made the motor, i dont want you to think that im an idot. I am actually thinkin of puttin it in a mustang or a truck. I have 4.6 in my older truck, but it about to go, so i was thinkin of putting it in that, i think i might go with the mustang because of the big let off im weight. thank you

no the 3.4l was one of the worst motors ford ever made. while yes it made a bit more power then the v6 the cam sprokets tended to walk slip and then there goes the valve train

if u built a 4.6L up right it will handle 7800 rpm redline. with just balanced and forged internals. and also u have to take into consideration the difference in exotic metals the ford GT uses for internals and valvetrain. which is much different from the cobra R and lightning

while it is true there is no replacement for displacement. the 5.4L would have been a much more sporty and higher reving motor if it was a equal bore/stroke like the 4.6L that half inch longer stroke just creates more long run problems

yeah, im loving the picture, if it makes you feel anybetter, I have a 2001 supercrew 5.4L 4x4 and whooped one of those honda civic del sol things last night. i thougt it was rather funny. It was a good 4-5 supercrew lengths.

Brad,

If you are thinking of shoehorning a 5.4 into a mustang check out Modular Depot. http://forums.modulardepot.com/
They have a forum devoted to 5.4's. They will be better able to tell you what you are going to need to do to fit it in a mustang. Something to consider in a 5000 lbs vehicle. You need torque to get it moving. Hp is a derived figure based on torque over time. If you aren't making torque you are not making HP. Plain and simple. If you are going to have to spin the engine to 7800 rpm to make power you might consider getting a different set up. How long will an engine last spinning over 6000 rpm on a regular basis???? Any part you can put on a 4.6 will fit the 5.4 except for the intake manifold.

only thing is it takes same amount of time for the 4.6L to reach 7800 rpm as it does for the 5.4l to make 6500rpm. but its all preference is how i see it. both have their pro's and con's. but i like the humm of a high reving V8
