Flying Spark Plugs

Great forum here guys - Lot's of good information

I have an '01 F150 with 94K miles and have been very pleased with the performance thusfar. Other than changing the oil religiously, I've not had to do a thing to the vehicle.

Having said that, I've been seeing hundreds (if not thousands) of complaints from people who have been experiencing problems with spark plugs blowing out of the cylinder head (seems the #3 plug tends to be the most common). People smarter than me have said the heads have only four threads holding the plugs in when there should be eight. Ford has not acknowledged this as a mfg defect, and the cost of repair is estimated anywhere from 3-5K, depending on the severity of the damage.

So my question is, should I just bite the bullet and replace the heads now or wait to see what happens? Logic tells me if it does occur, the damage could potentially be much worse....

You don't have to replace the heads.

People have been getting great service by putting the inserts in the heads, made for this specific problem.

As he said, theres no need to replace the heads, you can just put inserts in. You can do it as preventative maintenance if you want, but I would just not worry about it unless you actually blow a plug, and then you can just get inserts installed on all 8 at the same time.

Welcome! You won't see posts about the millions of owners whose spark plugs haven't blown out. Simply check that the plugs are installed properly.
