1995 ticking/missing on accell

1995 ticking/missing on accell
My truck has recently been making a ticking noise, and seems to be missing when accelerating in 3rd and 4th gears only. A friend changed plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, fuel and air filter. None helped. Any ideas?
1995 FORD TRUCK F150 1/2 TON P/U 2WD
6 Cylinders 300 Y 4.9L EFI
Also, the ticking is new since he replaced everything. The missing was there before he changed them.
