Cold start
Cold start
1997f150 4x4 4.6ltr.
After much searching and reading of my chiltons book, Im still not very clear on what sensor would be most responsible for cold starts. I think if I understand past post correctly, that it should be the coolant sensor that is threaded into or near the top of the motor? the motor has 140 thousand and it will start fine above 15 degrees, but sometimes I have to help it along with my foot when we have those 15 or below mornings like we have been having. Thanks to all that respond. Have a great day.

The responsible component is the Idle Air Control valve (IAC).
It is responsible for providing air to bypass the closed throttle plate during idling (among other functions).
They get gummed up or wear out. You can try cleaning it as a bandaid, but usually replacement is needed.
If replacing or cleaning, unhook the battery to force the computer to relearn idle strategy.

Thank you for your reply's. I will look into this item and pick one up so I can do it over the weekend. Once again thank you.
Should be a fun weekend, Got tranny fluid to change in my 79 gmc truck. Might have to sucker little brother (that wants to be a mechanic) to help on these projects.

Replacing the IAC on the 4.6L is so easy its not even funny...its held onto the side of the throttle body by two bolts. Simply unplug the sensor, remove the bolts, replace it, plug it back in, you're done. 5 minute job tops.
Although, if the passages are clogged up, you'll want to clean them out, which can take time.
