Truck Maintenance ideas...
Hey guys.. Anyone have a checklist of things I should go over for a complete maintenance checkover of my truck? 98 F150 4x4 hitting 140k. Any spots I should go through and clean out etc. Trucks got a pretty trouble-free life span with the exception of a metal tube I need to replace I have that listed on another thread. That, the starter, alt, AC clutch and plugs/wires are all I've ever done to it besides change the oil.. And beat the crap out of it.
Oh i have flushed out the radiator.. Recharged the AC... those kinds of things. I was going thinking of flushing the front/rear axles, the tranny and transfer case. Anyone know how to flush the tranny on this truck and what oils to use in all of those gear boxes? I'm curious about what kind of sensors I should go through and clean/replace.
That would be the 150K mile service. At that point, you should have already serviced the rear diff (and front diff if equipped) by the 100K mile mark as recommended. If you haven't, get spankin! The Transfer case (if so equipped) requires much more frequent service than the diffs. Check the fluid condition and it should be bright red like the tranny fluid. Run a fuel injection cleaning, flush the power steering and brake fluid, check the tranny fluid, plugs and so forth, then rip up some rubber!
What fluid should I use for my TCASE and Rear Diff? Rear is an 8.8.
I've owned the truck since 110k miles.... I have all of the receipts from the last owner as far as stuff he put into it he had taken incredibly good care of it just never had any problems.... And I ram snow with it too she's a tough truck.

you should check and replace the wear items. check ball joints, tie rods, u-joints, etc. shocks should have been replaces a few times by now. flush the brake fluid and prolly replace the rubber brake lines. remember they go bad on the inside. this will firm up the pedal feel. the front O2 sensors could be replaced.
read the owners manual for more info and fluid types.
download one here for free if you need one.

If you want the stuff Ford says to do :

You can enter your truck info, and get the recomended maint items.
There are a few things that others have already posted that are on the list to do ( T-Case fluid change, coolant flush, lube yoke on the Diff, trans fluid and filter, etc ).
Mike T suggests changing the O2 snesors at 60K, so you are a bit overdue for those. I don't recall if the '98 is 1 set or 2 sets of O2 sensors ( need to take a look at it ). I am looking for Mike's post in a thread on this topic..can't find it straight away.
If you downloaded the manual, it should have this schedule in the back of the book, else you can get it online in a printable format from fleetford.

The front and rear diffs take Synthetic GL5 fluid. The Xfer case takes transmission fluid, probably just Dex for that year. (mercon/dexron III)
And all those other hard parts should be given a once over. If you don't have a CEL on, I wouldn't worry about the O2 sensors cause they are still performing within spec. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What tranny?
Stick? Just undo the drain and fill plugs and refill with some fresh Mercon ATF.
Auto? What tranny? Look on your door jam sticker and find the trans code. E is the E4OD/4R100 which must be flushed and filled with Mercon ATF. U is the 4R70w which must be flushed with Mercon V.
