Angry 5.4 timing problem

I have a problem with 97 f150. I took it to a mechanic and he said that it was a timing problem. I hear a very loud noise when running. I can't tell if it has a miss or not. I also change my oil regularly. I don't know much about engines and stuff so if you guys could just lead me. Thanks~

Yes I do believe it is the chain clattering. I am not mechanically inclined.

You would at least need a timing gun to adjust timing which isnt too difficult (unless you've never done it before)... unless there's a mechanical problem causing offset timing it should be a problem free task. You do need to be mechanically inclined to adjust timing you may want to have a repair shop do it.

How do I know if it has done any damage to the engine or not? Is it better to replace the engine of just the chain. Is it a chain or a belt?

The noise is most likely caused by the chain clattering against worn chain guides or the tensionners. The Front cover has to come off to inspect. BTY Ignition timing is controlled by the PCM and can not be adjusted manually. Find a competent mechanic and have him look at it.
