*five hundred thousand mile club*
1/2 a million miles will likely be a test............I am a faithful believer of long life in an automobile......I'm 50 years old and have to my credit more than fifty automobiles, most with near, or over 200K..........VOLVO carried me from 200K to 350K (b230) for six years.....then I bought a 190-E, and at 159K to 326K was astounding.......I caught the MB bug.....Drove an 83 300-D from 325K to 667K....world record is a shade over 1 million miles....currently I own an 87 300D, with 270K, best of all automobiles I have ever owned! I do love my F150 and will give it love too...................
The question isn't about how long engines and transmissions last. Okay, so let's say an engine is guaranteed for 200k miles with some consistency with real good care. Okay. 200k. That's 10 years. But the outside will need to be repainted, because the paint will look like **** after that time. The inside, even more so. The seats will smell and look like **** and be bad. The carpeting, the headliner. So to redo the cab will cost a grand, and to repaint a grand. Although I guess that's better to pay 2k than to pay the high premium for a new car...
So maybe just freshen up a vehicle every 3 years for 2k and not make a 10-15k payment for a new vehicle. I guess that makes economic sense. For a pickup, having a nice pickup with a heavy grille guard and rear bumper guard will probably help out in keeping small accidents be relatively unconsequential.

But damn near 600,000 miles is still a shiat load of miles, diesel or not. The service life a Cummins is only like 500K right? And even if the motor is good, the rest of that truck has gotta be worn down to the nub.

Buckdropper, I have the same truck........Mine has the 5.4L and is at 212K right now. I painted the back window surround so that it matches the truck. Basicially doesn't have a scratch or ding on it. The paint is still nice and glossy. Looks like it may have 25-30K on it. Of course the box is fiberglass and the hood is aluminum so they will not rust, but winters in Michigan can still take a toll on the body. I am very happy with the truck.
