Iac

I've been having starting problems and been reading this forums for the past few week. When i start my truck it got to 15k RPM then comes down quick and will spuder or stall or just pick back up to normal rpms. So looking at the forums i wanted to look to see if my IAC was blocked up. When i took it off there was a little bit of carb built up on it but how far should the plunger move my mabe moved about 1/8th to 3/16 of an inch. Is that how far it needs to move? thanks

I would give it a good cleaning..(search the forum) there are many threads dealing with this...

I would also check the intake ports to the EGR.. these get pretty dirty and can affect the throttle idle

Check your PCV as well (or replace it....5.00 )

there could also be a vacuum leak somewhere

I cleaned the TB and even put seafoam in it too. The PCV is working pretty good and i do not see any vacum leaks any where. It only happens once in a while since i did all the cleaning, did you every have the IAC off if not can some one tell me how far they should open

I had it off,, but i do not recall the amount of movement. It could also be a bad gas issue...

Country Duck is on the right track.

Your IAC plunger should move maybe 1/8 - 3/16 " but be careful its plastic and can break---new IAC's are about 60 bucks and you might need a new one anyway. Wouldnt hurt to replace.

Could be a clogged PCV valve. Make sure it rattles freely when you pull it out of the valve cover.

Also could be a clogged throttle body...common on these motors. This fix is a little more involved because it requires you to remove the throttle body and clean very thoroughly, but it will only cost you 12 bucks in gaskets (which you get from Ford--make sure you dont get the paper ones, get the thin, reuseable metal-type ones) and a few cans of THROTTLE BODY cleaner, and a 2-3 hour time period to do this repair. It's not bad at all, requires a few basic tools

Do a search for "Rough Idle Problem" under my name "Green_98" and read all 3 or 4 pages....lots of good pics and info when I did all this to my 4.6. Made it run like brand new, no pings, quicker response, etc

Good luck!
