Oil Filters

I've heard it said that Fram oil filters are substandard. Anyone have any input on that? Any suggestions as to what the better filters are?

How about REAL life experience?

OK.....3 vehicles that together have over 1 million miles on 'em. Only used Fram oil and air filters. Just because they're easy to get. For me.

No complaints, from me.

How about the brand of oil? Only used Catrol in 'em.

Fram = Orange can of death. I've known about the problems with Fram filters for a couple years now. I've seen the studies and heard too many stories of how they have come apart on people. 20 years ago fram was a good filter.........NOT ANYMORE. I'll only use motorcraft or wix/napa filters in my 2 Fords

I use the Purolator PureONE series - has been since the last maybe dozen or so changes. After maybe the 2nd or 3rd change I noticed that the oil coming out of the engine during changes was considerably cleaner than before... under the same driving conditions.

Hell, I've been using Fram oil filters in my vehicles for well over 25 years with NO problems.

Orange can of death, good one.... I've read the studies and all, but never seen a single filter with an issue. And driving 45 - 55K per year, I go thru a LOT of filters...

If Fram filters concern you, by all means avoid them. Wix, Puralator, Motorcraft are all fine filters. I've found when in doubt use the OEM part. It's spec'd out for the application so, how can you go wrong....

Good luck

A friend of a friend worked for Allied Signal and told me of the cost cutting they used in manufacturing Fram filters. Less filtering media, cheaper or no anti drain back valves, etc. I've never used Fram filters extensively though, mainly 'cause I never found any real reason to with how cheap and good (according to third party sources) Motorcraft filters are.

Whats funny is this. Fram and Pennzoil are the same filter, with a different wrapper. Pennzoil owns the Fram line. With the milllions and millions of cars that jiffy lubes and pennzoil 10 minute oil change centers have serviced and used that kind of filter, I've never heard of a filter related failure, beyond the gasket. Sounds more like an internet myth than anything else. I'd bet that we have used over 10,000 filters in my shop in the last few years, and the most popular three vehicles we service are Expedition, F150, and Explorer. Never has one come back with a filter related problem.

Honeywell owns Fram, Prestone and Autolite.

Pennzoil-Quaker State is owned by Shell Oil.

Fram does make some filters for Pennzoil, however.

Back when I had my 03 Mustang Gt, I only put Fram toughguard filters (or what ever they were called) on it. I beat that poor thing to death. Regular redlines, downshifting, etc. Never had a problem with them nor my engine.

cheap filter = cheap filter
you get what you pay for
$40,000.00 truck, $5.00/qt oil--------$2.50 filter, I don't think so!

Allied Signal makes Fram, and they are owned by Honeywell. As far as I can tell, they also make the filters for pennzoil. If you really want to know, I could call the district rep and have him find out. Reguardless of who owns them, I still don't see this anti-fram crowds point. Millions of cars run on Pennzoil and Fram filters without issue.

And I wouldn't pay 40K for a new Lincoln LT, much less just an F150. The most I ever spend on a vehicle was 20K, and even at that I was pissed off. What I can't figure is this.....Assume your house cost 200,000 bucks. Roughly that would mean your truck cost 12.5% of the cost of your house.
