Loud noise under hood..

I just bought a 99 expedition. 5.4L. There seems to be what sounds like an air compressor in the left front of the Motor when looking under the hood. It runs alot and is loud.I first thought it was smog junk for unused fuel etc..
But my Chevy's only runs like that just after a hot start.

Anyone know what the purpose is? And can i unhook it and not have problems? Thanks Tony

The heat works. Its not the AC compesser,i dont think. Its a steel box with .5 inch tubes going into it. It vibrates just like an air compressor you would plug into a Cig lighter. Sounds and shakes like one..it on the fenderwall on the left side about 5 inches back from the hood.

If by left front you mean left if you're looking at the engine compartment, by the washer fluid reservoir, that's the air suspension compressor. As they get older, they get noisier. There's an upgraded bracket and insulator kit that you can install to quiet them down some, but ultimately the best results are gained by replacing the compressor.
