F150 or SD
Hey guys I am a 17 teen and half year old with a 2001 F150 XLT 4x4 5.4 3.73 Ls E4od w/75,000 miles Pretty sweet uh
. Heres the real question I am in to land scaping with my uncle and Hual about 2 - 2.5 bobcat scoopes of black dirt and gravel about 6 times a year in the bed. And Pull and 15 foot open Utility trailer W/ trailers brakes. Loaded Most likeys weights about 4000-5000 pounds. Question is that with this kind of loads will the truck live to see 200,000 miles? I have the towing pakage so i got the trans and oiler coolers along with the 7-pin for the trailer brakes. And also had the trans and coolant flushed about 4 months ago. Or is it time to upgrade to a F250?
If so will the 5.4 be good enough or the PSD. I would like to stay with the 5.4 I think it handles the load good. But with the 5.4 in the F250 it will have to work harder just to move the truck, with every thing being bigger right??
Or stay with the truck i got I hate to see it go. My uncle Has a GMC 3500
( I know... Iknow..) With he pulls the bobcat with other junk weights about 9000 pounds total. So 5000-5500 is about the max i will be seeing.
Thanks, Josh
Any help would be nice

The question back to you is what is your idea of 200,000 mile life?
The answer is about as follows, how much maintaince will you do for oil and filter changes, how much will you change the trans fluid and filter etc.
As alway the truck will need repairs of various kinds over the your expected life of the truck and may even need the trans rebuilt.
Doing these repairs is really what determins when the truck becomes a liability rather than an asset for the repairs needed.
As for the loads being 5 to 6k lbs, it depends on if this is a daily or weekly load routine and how hard of a pull you need to do at times.
6 k loads with the combined weight of the truck gets up near the specified limit of towing weight so that is a consideration in longevity of the trans.
So it would be hard to place a time or distance interval on life expectancy.
Even an F250 will need the same maintaince and may last little longer under the same conditions.
Hope this gives you one point of view to consider as it is looking at the reality of things over time.
Good luck.

Howdy, me and my dad do the exact same thing you do (cept pulling that load daily), and while a half ton truck will do it, a PSD makes it a lot easier and having the bigger truck that isn't as stressed makes me feel better. Only thing that I would change to make my situation even more relyable is to have the ZF6 manual instead of the 4R100 auto.
Also what tranny do you have? Look on your door jam sticker to see what the trans code is.
E is the 4R100 (the E4OD's replacement in 98) and is pretty tough as long as you keep the fluid temps under 220ish. (I would also add a trans temp gauge if your serious about your truck workin hard.)
U is the light duty 4R70w which wont really be happy with big towing all the time.
