5.4, V10, Or The Psd

I am looking at 99-02 F250s and I dont not know if i should get the 5.4,v10, or the PSD. I will pull a 5500-6500 pound trailer with a bobcat about 5 times a years. And littler trailers about 25 times a year. And also will be times with some dirt and gravel in the bed. So with that said I think I want the PSD, but will the 5.4 do the job. I dont think I want the V10 with the way gas prices are going and Its miles per gallon. Also with be driving the truck to and from work each day about 10 miles round trip.

i would go with the PSD, the V-10 is a gas hog and you can't beat a diesel for towing

Can't beat the 7.3 Powerstroke. I'm a little leary of the newer 6.0 because of all their problems, but 1999-2002 will have the 7.3.

If that is all you are going to tow get a 1/2 ton with the 5.4.

Otherwise get the 6.0 PSD, they worked the bugs out the first year.

You think a 1/2 ton with 5.4 will do the job? I am palning on keeping it a while too, Wont be to hard on the trans? I will come with the towing package, so it will have trans &oiler coolers.I was leaning toward the 1/2 tons to began with but those dealers have been talkin me into a 3/4 ton "to big of a job for a half" Brakes and Suspension etc. I kind of thought they were crazy I have tailers brakes on my bobcat trailers, but do not on my smaller trailers 2200-4000 pounds loaded.

Thanks agian guys, Josh

If I were in your situation, I'd go with the PSD. Heck...with only a SCT tune and basic bolt ons they'll run a low 14 second 1/4 mile!

7.3L all the way. Couldn't be happier with mine, and theres no sense whippin a halfton truck when the bigger truck will do it better and longer. These superdutys are also refined enough to be daily drivers if need be.

A 5.4 will do it, but it will work twice as hard as a diesel to get there. My 5.4 auto struggles with 3000 lbs, my Dad's 7.3 6-speed drags along 12000 lbs all day long without a hint of complaining. What a half ton is rated to tow, and what I'd ever tow with it are totally different.

If you are going to tow anything on a regular basis, a diesel is the only sensible route IMO.

Try towing that much weight with a half ton and get back to me on it! Anything over 6000lbs on a regular basis needs to be over 1/2 ton.

No, read your owners manual...rear diff, tire size and reg cab, short box ext cab, ect are variables...yes a F-150 can tow 9800 lbs, but that F-150 is reg cab long box, no 4by with a 410, 5.43v, most F-150 owners are not driving this truck, I would not tow a trailer/bob cat with a F-150, bob cats come in a wide range of models, with a wide range of LBS...it's to easy to max out your truck.

So with that said i am thinking about a f250 with a 5.4, or not. I am not sure it will have eoungh power to get the job done. If i get the f250 all it is bigger frame ,brakes and everything. So the 5.4 will have to work harder just to move the truck vs a f150 with a 5.4. Or should I suck it up and just get a PSD and pay the price for Diesel. I will be towing on just about all flat land and the trailer loaded with the bobcat with be around 5500-6000 or so.

Thanks agian, Josh
