5.4 Engine Lifter Noise?

Hi guys, I'm a newbie here on the site. I just bought a Black 2000 Lariat 4x4 with a 5.4 and it has 123,000 miles on it. I was wondering if anybody has lifter noise with their truck? If I stick my head out the window under accelleration I can hear a ticking sound that I assume is a lifter. Also at idle there is a buzzing sound comin from under the hood. It doesn't seem to be the p/s pump or the alternator. It sounds like a buzzing coil maybe? I'm not sure. If anyone has comment it would help. Thanks!

The buzzing is the pcv valve it is made of plastic and buzzes at idle. You can get a metal replacment. Search this forum as there is lots of info on this valve.

Ford has problems with the PCVvalve splash guard located on the passenger side falling off onto the cam and lifters crearing this same type of noise.Maybe this info will help.

Could be a valve or lifter tap. The best thing you can do for that engine with that many miles is use Lucas Oil Stabilizer with each oil change. That stuff is magic. I have used it religiously in a Chevy 350 engine and have well over 200,000 miles on it now. It will quiet down the engine, make it run smoother, and greatly extend its life. And if you feel like spending the money, I'd also use synthetic oil too.

Synthetic on an engine with that many miles? I am wondering why you would suggest that? I have been told over and over again not to use synthetic on high mileage engines. What is your reasoning behind this?

it could also be an exhaust manifold leak if you only hear it under acceleration. i would think that a lifter noise would be more pronounced at idle.well hope this helps ypu out in your trouble shooting.

I began using synthetic oil in a Chevy 350 that had about 120,000 miles on it. The engine now has over 250,000 miles on it and runs as good as new. That's my reasoning behind it.

synthetic in a high mileage engine is a waste of $$. If it were me, and I were sure it wasn't the PCV valve but was indeed a lifter I'd put in a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. I'm generally not an additive person but this quiets noisy lifters quite nicely. It's been around forever and (unlike most additives) the absolute WORST thing I have ever heard is that some people don't believe it works.

Lucas has had some bad studies done lately on bobistheoilguy.com...go there and read the study.

I'm inclined to think it's that ear-ring flapping in the breeze.

Actually I have to lean toward the exaust leak under accelleration.
The injectors will click or buzz depending on how you interpet the sound at idle. Also belt tensioner bearing or alternator may be headed south.
I doubt you could here the PCV over all the other normal hums and clicks of a running engine unless you had your ear (please remove all jewelery first) right on top of it.

Thats my story and I'm stickin to it

zx10duran,
What's the verdict?
Does your friend have a possible answer for us?
I am trying the Marvel Mystery Oil this weekend. This looks like good stuff. You can add it to gasoline, diesl, motor oil,and tranny oil, who knows what else.

Beware of Plug Blow-out!

Just before my Expedition 5.4 blew out a spark plug (which is a big problem) we heard a ticking noise that we thought was a lifter. According to the threads on this site most people who blew out plugs had a lifter or ticking sound. If you pull your plugs and retorque them, or replace them you may ward off this problem. If that isn't the problem you can rule it out for noise. When they blow out they take the threads with them and you have a huge problem.

Good Luck.
