5.4L Engine Differences between F-150 & Expy?

A friend of mine has just bought an 01 Expy that has a blown engine. Apparently the prior owner didn't know that an engine needs oil to survive and drove until the motor died with no oil. Is there any differences between the Expy and F-150 as far as the engines go. I told him that a low miles 03 would be the best, but I am not sure of any differences between the F-150, F-250, E-150, E-250 or Expy. Also are there any differences from 01 to 03 other than the improved spark plugs in the 03? I assume that the block, heads and accessories will be the same. Is there anything else that I should beware of?

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any practical differences. The Expy has a 4R100 trans, the F150 probably had a 4R70W, but they bolt up the same. I think the 5.4 started getting more plug threads in mid-late '03. An '03ish Superduty 5.4 may have an external oil cooler, with the filter pointing downwards on the driver's side of the oil pan, whereas most of the trucks and SUVs by '03 had the oil filter sticking out of the driver's side of the engine near the power steering pump. That's all I can really think of ATM. Hopefully someone better versed along all those vehicle lines will see this thread and give you more info than I can.

I have another question. While looking for a motor I have found that some F-150's have an EGR and some do not. Why would some trucks have EGR and others not? I assume that the Expy has one. Am I correct?

Go to the motor swap thread and see what we have found and have run into.
