we removed bed and wanted to check the wires and with a test light we get
voltage for about 1 second then stops we then turn key off and back on
and we have voltage for 1 second hook up to pump and turn key off and on and it pumps for 1 second any ideas we did check the button inside cab and fuses

What year are we talking about?
The power action you saw is normal. When the ignition is just turned on, the pump will only activate long enough to put pressure in the fuel rails then stop.
During the cranking, the EEC will reoperate the "pumps" full time.
If you are working on an 86 to 90 truck, there are two pumps. One in the tank and one on the frame rail about driver's location.
Later years may have gone to one pump.
Testing should be done with a pressure gauge on the fuel rail so you can be sure what you have.
