Ignition Switch

2001 Excursion, AT -column shift
Not sure which is the correct forum for this problem but, here goes. About an hour after driving my truck, I got into it to make another trip. The ignition switch would not turn - not even to the accessory position. I tried a couple of times, removed the key and reinserted it and then tried my wife's key. Nothing worked, but in the process I noticed that the steering wheel was not locked. I tried turning the steering wheel back and forth a few times to make it lock or make the key turn, still no luck. Then, I partially removed the key and reinserted it (somewhat forcefully) several times in quick succession. I felt somewhat of a spring action as I reinserted the key and, after that, the key turned and the truck started. The steering wheel lock still does not work. I am not so concerned about the steering wheel lock as I am about the possibility of the ignition switch hanging up again. Any ideas about what may have happened?
Thanks!

sometimes that happens, and you just gotta rock the wheel back and forth. Or release the brake and let it roll a couple of inches.

Sounds like something's screwed up in the ignition lock.

I have been having issues too. Only my truck will not return to the completely off position where I can remove the key. I just started noticing this about 2 weeks ago, tonight it left me waiting 15 mins before I could screw around with it enough to get it to turn completely off. Very very aggravating....I gotta find what the hell the deal is.

Get some lock lubricant (not WD-40 or anything else) and use it. Sounds like it's just binding up internally.
