It retards the timing to stop knock. It's excessive advance that causes knock.

Well, replaced the coil packs from the set from Global Automotive, and went back to my OEM plugs (removed around 15k miles to combat the pinging problem, returned because obviously they weren't the issue).

My idle is probably somewhat better, but the detonation issue hasn't gone away at all.

At present, I don't think there is a whole lot else I can replace to try to fix this problem. Over the course of the issue, I have had that wire sensor near the air filter replaced by the dealer, had the EGR valves & throttle body thoroughly cleaned off the vehicle, I use seafoam a couple of times a year, replaced fuel filter a number of times.

Other than the computer, I really can't think of what else could be causing this! Now that its so bad, I am thinking about going back to the dealer, but am afraid of how much they will charge to diagnose the issue, and I'm not sure if they would tell me if the problem has existed since then (I.E., the computer was reprogrammed at 15k miles with a bad program, or something similar).
