Cross Threaded Spark Plug
Cross Threaded Spark Plug
Well Gents i recently found out what happens when you have someone change your plugs. Well needless to say i have a plug that ejected itself and broke my COP. Since i dont want to risk metal fillings droping into engine from using a inverse tap. So found out how much work is into my:
2000 F150
4.6 v8
So now i have it disassempled and have the head pulled since i am used to working on older 302's I am not used to the OHC's. My three questions are
1) I am following the haynes book for doing the timing and timing chains. Is there anything i need to look at or pay close attention too since i know its an impact motor and know if I dont get it exactly right there goes this engine.
2)Purchasing the head gasket set. Know anywhere besides local autozone to get the head gasket kit for a reasonable price. i know o'reailys is about 190 is the cheapest i've seen it.
3) The main question. Since i have the engine tore down this far any performance mods i can do while i am building it back up. Thinking about geting a new throttle body, any other suggestions? before i build it back up this next month, if i had the cash i would be droping in a turbo but looking at mods under 700 for the time being.
I will already be doing these mods
-removing the air intake inner pipe
-doing the 3" pvc intake mod
-and the PCV valve intake filter
Thanks guys

If you came on this site before starting working on it then you would have found that quite a few people have had blown plugs. Most people, including myself fix them with an insert kit and do it with the head still on. it only takes about an hour.
I'm not sure on where you can get the gasket kit but you will also need to replace the head bolts.

Well i know about the tool
Well yes i found out about the KP tool insert a lil afterwards but still notice it "greatly reduces the chance" which I am not trying to be picky or anything but i dont have the cash if a peice feel back in and carved a slot in my valve dont have the money to deal with that headache so i am just being overly cautios since its my "baby" as i am sure yours is aswell.
But definatly any suggestions on basic performance mods while i have it torn apart?

When I replaced my head gaskets I got everything from http://www.fordpartsonline.com. They seemed to have pretty resonable prices, although they don't have a head gasket kit, you have to pick everything out seperate. I also put on some headers while it was apart.
Looked there
I have looked at fordpartsonline and needless to say the full kit is cheaper at NAPA autoparts then just 2 head gaskits. Curious what the previous poster ment by adding inserts? If anyone has a local part store that has the kit gasket kit cheaper then 190 i would be glad to order it from there.

Port and Polish and/or cams.
You will need a tune if you do these, which, when including the cost of the cams and/or p&p will be more than your 700 bucks, but since you mentioned a turbo might be in your future, it sounds like your pretty big on the performance, so its something you might want to look into. I know if I had my heads off thats what I would be doing.
Plus, if you are really big into the mods, its probably something you will want to to later on down the road, so why not do it while you have it tore apart? Ehh?
