Knocking noise 2004 5.4L Supercrew

Does anyone know why my truck sounds like the lifters are knocking. It has 7000 miles on it and I have changed the oil on it twice already. I am using Motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend. It is not real loud but it is definetly making a noise. I have plenty of oil pressure and all guages are reading properly. According to the owners manual it says a light knocking is normal??

What oil filter are you using? Is it noisy hot or cold?

Motorcraft Oil Filter. Seems to make the noise hot or cold.

Without hearing it myself, it's difficult to say whether you've got a problem or not. These engines are a little noisier at idle than previous 5.4s were, a little noise from the VCT system and injectors is normal. If you're running the proper weight oil and proper filter (which you are), it may be worthwhile having your dealer check it out.

RE: Knocking noise 2004 5.4L Supercrew

I got my 02 5.4L Supercab 4X4 at 28K miles. It was consuming oil when using Motorcraft 5W-20 and other 5W-20 oils. I heard a slight knock at start up especially in cold weather under 20 degrees. Back then Ford said the oil consumption and knock at start up were "normal". Based in part on advice on this forum, I switched to full synthetic (Mobil, Valvoline and Pennzoil) and the oil consumption went away. I also noticed that the oil pressure came up quicker on start and the start up knock went away. Two Ford dealer employees and two very good mechanics have told me to stay away from 5W-20 mineral oils and blends, so I am staying with full synthetic because it flows better into the very tight tolerances of the 5.4L. I have used full synthetic in 0W-20 and 5W-30.

Could be worth trying especially if you can change oil yourself and buy the oil and filter on sale. Ford's warranty requires a filter with a silicone anti-drainback valve.
