The filter is located under the car, on the driver's side right next to the chasis, it's really easy to change, I change my filter every 10k miles.

And you need a special tool to change it, it's cheap but you need it.

I think owners manual says 40,000 for fuel filter change but they are not expensive. If in doubt, change it, you'll need a tool to take the old one off all info is available, do a search.

I belive you just need a screw driver, I dont' remember, the filter should cost less then 15 dlls at any Ford Dealer or AutoZone, just check under your truck you'll know right away what tools you need.

That above link will tell you what you need to know about removing the filter.
You cant remove it with just a screwdriver, you have to have a fuel filter disconnect tool (shown in the link).

If you buy the filter from Ford, its between $15 and $20. If you buy one from AutoZone or Advanced Auto or whatever, its usually less than $10.

I hear all kinds of differing opinions on when to change it, so I just do it about once a year-ish...its cheap enough that its not a huge deal or anything if you do it "too often"

I ran my 97 with the oem filter for 120,000 miles never had a problem and when i cut it open it still may have had another 20,000 on it. It really was not very discolored nor was it plugged in any way.
