1997 f150 check engine light (error code) Long!

1997 f150 check engine light (error code) Long!

My 4.6 is giving me fits! That is a word isn`t it?

About 6 wks ago the check engine light came on, a friend of mine has a snap on scanner as he`s a mechanic. anyway it was indicating a bad ias so i bought one put it on & he cleared the code. Been fine until recently. I had noticed erratic idling mostly until engine warmed up. it would idle in park at apx 13-1500 rpm them might drop to 800 then back up. I would also notice "blue smoke" when i first started it like a bad valve seal but, if ya got out quick enough & went to the exhaust you could smell that it was running rich but would clear right up.

Anyway, i noticed yesterday it was doing that erratic idling again & today the check eng light came back on so i went to autozone (where i bought the ias) & had them to plug in their scanner & it showed bad idle speed control which he stated its the ias i replaced 6 wks back so he cleared the code, i turned it off & went back in got another & replaced it. driving around town in the afternoon * wham,, it`s back on again!! went back to the zone, had 2 codes both being the idle speed control. he cleared it & i drove around for awhile & here it goes again but i knew it would. he told me i might need to take it somewhere where they could hook to it While driving it. I`ve not been able to get in touch with my mechanic friend.

He (fellow at auto zone) thought there might be some kinda idle control sensor on the transmission that might be feeding the ias or idle speed control bad info & that leads to another quiestion.

I`ve noticed a lot or most of the time when slowing down, that if i don`t come to a complete stop, the transmission won`t shift to low gear, shifts down to 2nd & feels like when you start to accelerate it`s being help back cause it didn`t shift to first. could this possibly be related? & if so or not, whats the next thing i should try? Oh, i have 355 gears but don`t see how that could come into play with the transmission not shifting down ( if it`s suppose to). You do have to come to a Complete stop for it to shift to 1st.

i mean`t iac valve :)

Don`t know what i was thinking. i stated above ias.
