The main reason I'm asking is because I have a blown motor and the service guy said they will replace the "small block". I remember back when (20 years?) somebody I knew had a chevy big block that went bad and the dealership replaced it with a small block. I just want to be sure that I get the same size of engine and not some smalller v8 - if that's even possible.

Are you sure he didn't say "short" block?

Yup, and they are my favorite style of ford engines. The 352 I tuned up would spank any of this stock fuel injection crap today.

It has nothing to do with Chevy nomenclature. It's not a big block. It's not a small block. It's a Modular.

Small block Fords are the 221, 255, 289, 302 (aka "5.0"), 351W, 351C, 351M, and 400M.

Big block Fords include the FE family and the 385-series family. The FEs include the 352, 360, 390, 427, 428, as well as a few others. The 385s are basically the 429 and 460.

Mod engines are the 4.6 SOHC/DOHC, 5.4 SOHC/DOHC, and the 6.8 SOHC V10.

I think momalle was right, it sounds like they are talking about replacing the SHORT BLOCK. Compare to the long block.

Talking

I would think they said "SHORT" block. which refers to crank, rods, pistions, and block. long block would be the other typical reference which includes the shortblock plus heads and a few other things.

Hope this helps out

Short block does make sense. I'll ask the question again, now that I am more informed.

Thanks everybody!

Sorry, that's not right either, there are small block chevy's with four bolt mains. The four bolt mains were primarily used in towing applications such as trucks but were in some cars when the GM God's just decided it was desirable.

Alright, the motor isn't a "Big" block or "Small" block it is a "modular". It has two cams and it is an interference motor which neither the "Big" blocks nor the "Small" blocks have or are. Secondly, if they were going to change the 5.4 to a 4.6 it would cause these guys such a headache that they would rather cut their own penises off rather than go about it that way. Shops are in it for fast turnaround and putting a 4.6 into a truck that had a 5.4 would be a nightmare and it wouldn't be as profitable. I agree with the previous posts it was probably a short block that they were talking about or maybe they were just dumb as hell and didn't know what they were talking about in which case I would go and find me another shop. Pick up the phone and call them back... ask them to clarify.

I used to love outrunning the big block Cheys(454s and 396s) with my Ford . They would come up and say, "what big block Ford are you running?" and I would get to deflat them by saying its just a small block Ford, a 351 Clev. Talk about a conversation dampner!

Well technically it is a modular motor as anyhting without pushrods and modularly designed with overhead cams is, but as far as cubic inches and block size, id hardly say you can call 330 ci a big block.
