13.5-15 mpg. Is this as good as it gets?
Hi guys,
Just looking for comparision & others thoughts. I have a 01 screw 5.4 2wd that I got in july. My first Ford & I am 41 years old so I drive a lot easier than I used to. It was really clean & I liked the 4 doors & big tires, 275/60-17 & the wife liked it. I usually fill up about once a week. 87 octane, chevron. I have no idea what was run in it for the prev. 113000 miles. I found this site & others for research. First week I added the magnaflow 2.5 DISO 3" y-pipe fix w/ an 18" magnaflow 3" SIDO 2.5" muffler & pipes @ a local perf. shop. I installed the Airforce one kit from Troyer Perf. Other items were a 2" rear drop, billit grill, bug deflec. & mud flaps, ooohhh, it's purty. My mileage for the first 8 weeks has been, 12,14.09,14.22,15.02,15.0,14.33,13.53,13.59, untill I installed new M.C. sparks plugs which replaced the originals. Most were worn to about .060-.065. Mileage since the change has been 14.37, 14.56, 14.06 and 14.69. It is 16 mi. to work, 1st 4mi are 45-60mph w/1/2 mi of waiting a few cycles on lites before getting on the interstate. Usual run is 70 mph, 2000 rpm shifts w/O.D. @2000rpm = 70 mph. Right lane, steady out of the way & drafting when I can. Lunch runs are 1/2 city, 1/2 hiway. Weekends are kids games & errand running, sames stuff, 2000rpm shifts, coasting.
The window sticker for this trk is 14-18. I have always split the diff for EPA mileage est in my vehicles. If I tried, I could achieve the hiway #s in my weekly travels. I am driving waaay slower & easier than I ever have and even with the efficient mods, I am only hitting on 14 mpg. I know it's a truck & they use gas but I hate not getting better when I am really trying too, even when it was .80 gal, much less $3.00 gal. Like turning a 18 second 1/4 mile when it should be 16.2 seconds. Hell, I don't even pay for my gas, but I hate being inefficient in any vehicle. If my old Honda said 28 mpg & I got 25, I want to know why.
Have I done what I need too and this is just as good as it gets? New O2 sensors or any tricks that I have not found. E-fans, computer mods, lowering kit? I guess this is a performance question as much as anything, and I want my vehicles perform where they should, speed or mileage. I have read many, many hours on this site for info about this and other items, so please don't kneejerk a search suggestion. I wanted to compare & hear some ideas about our trucks. Thanks for everyones helpful info on this site.

Unfortunately you pay for versatility. For towing, moving, wheelin', fishing and hunting a truck is awesome but sure isn't a daily driver. My truck has 10,200 miles and the best average i got was about 17. I have heard from different friends and read in forums as well as tested on my vehicles; that the higher octane gas (although not much more expensive) does give better mileage and performance. I have tried it on long trips and it works(for me). Also the brand affects mileage in my opinion. I try to run Exxon, Chevron, Texaco, Shell, and try to avoid CITGO, ARCO, and smaller shops. I personally have had the best results with Chevron and Texaco. Exxon is hard to find sometimes depending on where you live. Also the mods have made your Vehicle run Richer/leaner. A Tuner chip might help be more efficient but that's about 400 bucks. Try using higher octane on your longer trips and see if it helps.Good luck
The MPG listed on the door is just a general estimate. You wont necessarily get that kind of mileage.
Theres nothing wrong with your truck, but you can try putting new O2 sensors in (Id would only worry about the front two), since you have quite a few miles on. This isnt a sure fire get-your-mileage-back sort of thing, but its something you should do with that many miles, and its possible you can get a some gas mileage back.
Ive seen some people with the 4.6L get great gas mileage, upwards of 18-20 MPG. But there arent THAT many of those out there. For your engine, the 5.4L, you are getting pretty much what everybody else gets, around 14-15MPG. I get about 12-13 MPG in the city, and up to 15 or 16 on the highway.
I just ordered an XCAL2 from Troyer on Monday, so when that comes in Im hoping to get some extra MPG (when Im staying off the throttle :P ) along with the performance gain.

wow. thats pretty good compared to me. i only get 11.5-12.5 city, and maybe 14 highway. pretty much no matter how i drive too. its worth it though. let me know if you guys find any ways to improve it though...... that would be kinda nice.
Well there are ways to do it, but by the time you see any improvements in MPG, you will have spent enough money that it wont matter you are getting better gas mileage.
In any case, you can get:
chip/tuner
e-fans
intake kit
underdrive pullies

I've only had mine long enough to use 1/2 tank, but at exactly 1/2 tank on the guage I've gone 220 miles. With a 25 gallon tank, that's 17 mpg (assuming the guage is accurate, which it probably isn't, but I'm hoping so).

In fact, every Ford that I have owned was like that. I've had a 2000 Focus, 2001 F150 4.2 V6, 2003 Mustang GT, 2001 F150 5.4L
Your mileage is right where mine has always been. I get 15-16 all highway, driving around 75. 12-13 in town, and normally 14 -14.5 mixed 30% town, 70% highway. Pulling a 6k trailer, I get 9-11, depending on conditions. As for the fuel tank, If I'm getting 15 mpg, I'll get 200 miles on the top half of the tank and 120 or so on the bottom half. This is with 2000 F-150 Ex. Cab 4x4 5.4, 116,000 miles.

I have a 2000 F150 2wd SCAB 5.4L and I monitor my MPG for every mile. I towed a 2,500lb trailer 511 miles and I got 12.47 MPG and on the return trip without the trailer I got 15.4mpg. Doing 70-75mph.
Thanks for the responses.
Stock or modded, I guess mine is about avg or so. I have not had a road trip to check hwy mileage. I sure was hoping to be a little higher w/ mods and driving technique. I am driving waaaaaaay easier than I used to & use to achieved an avg that split the mpg on the window on my last few vehicles. This babying it around & barely make the 14 is what is aggravating. Higher MPG or more speed is a performance goal, depending on what you want at the time.
I will finish out this tank & check it after I get thru grampaw'ing around. THEN...... I am going to flog the hell out of the next few tanks just to see what happens! I will document & let you know. It should be interesting.

My intake kit has seemed to DROP my gas mileage, not increase it. Yes, I know what you're thinking and NO - I am not stepping on the gas any more than I used to when I was getting 16 city, 20 highway. Now city is more like 13, and highway is more like 17. I guess the next logical step is to add exhaust (which I don't yet have), but if you still have factory exhaust, you might wanna think twice about the air intake.
