Cam Phaser questions
Ok, brought my rig in the the dealership for couple things. 1st: 3rd brake light leaking... results: Replacing light assembly and gasket... 2nd: intermident power rear window malfunction... results: Replacing rear power window motor... 3rd: check/listen to cam phasers... results: They need to listen to the motor cold. Was told that this issue really is more of a rap than the normal tap from the injectors and fuel pump?... I hear something, it does sound like dieseling. the service guy said in his opinion it was normal for these sounds...ie: fuel injectors and I beleive he said fuel pump? He said if it were the cam phasers it would sound like a rapping instead of a tapping. He said he has heard this issue before and that mine was not it. Mine is not loud, the motor sounds good. If it is normal I just want to get over the tapping... If it turns out to be cam phasers, I want to get them changed and get over that...Any one get the cam phasers replaced please chime in and let me know what it was that you heard? Thanks for any and all replies...
I dont think it possible to hear the fuel injectors over the rest of the engine. Only way I can hear mine is with a screwdriver (poor mans stethoscope) They just sound like ticking, no rapping sound. So I wouldnt think thats what it would be.
Thanks but can you please clarify? You are saying that the injectors are silent? I am not sure what to think at this time... Thanks...............

The new 04 and 05 injectors are much louder than the 97 to 2003s. I just purchased a 2005 supercrew lariat in august, and the injectors are much louder than my 2001 f-150 supercrew. I could not help you with the sound of the cam phasors. Try doing a search. I remember reading about this problem before I made my purchase in august.
Thanks, I just got back from the dealer. Spoke with the service guy again. He said the examples of cam phaser issues he knew of were very loud and noticable. The "noices" that I hear, are very normal for these motors. He said that it will be night and day between good and bad, no question...

i've been trying to deal with this problem too. i've been through alot with mine... they told me that it was a bad oil filter at first.. then reprogrammed the computer because it may have just been a tuning issue. then they replaced my right phaser, because thats what they thought it was, after failed attempts with the other two 'solutions'. turns out it wasnt. once replaced it still hasnt gone away. the other possibilites are the chain tensioners and injectors. injectors should just be a even ticking sound across the top of the motor. as far as the tensioners - these motors' cams are chain driven, and the tension that builds up is based on oil pressure. what i have been told is that when starting cold, the oil has drained back and takes longer to build pressure, thus causing the tensioners to make some noise. but then again, they've been wrong 3 times before...
just out of curiosity, what kind of oil and filter are you running?

I am running Mobil One Synthetic SAE 5W20 / Motorcraft FL-820S Filter. Anyone running Mobil One Synthetic SAE 5W30? I know there are people running the heavier wgt synthetic oil in their motor. Does Mobil One Synthetic SAE 5W20 have any advantage over the heavier wgt 5w30, besides being lighter for the tighter tolerances on these motors? Anyone with knowledge about running different oil wgts other than what the tags state. Please reply... Thanks

Thanks for the link, very informative... I listened to my motor "VERY" carefully this morning. The tapping that I am hearing is clearly evenly distriputed across both sides of the motor. That's all it is, very light tapping... I am convinced it is fuel injectors/ect. My motor on start up has no rap noice at all, smooth really. So I think for me, I am just being a little bit cautious. Seems there are many owners of Fords that know of the sounds they can make. My motor runs very strong, specially with the XCAL2 installed. Yes has ticking but certainly no rap... I have about 3k miles left before my next oil change. I do beleive I am going to try the Mobil One Synthetic 10W30...Thanks
Thicker than recommended oils may cause problems with the VCT phasers over the long run. I say "may," because I haven't seen any high mileage 5.4 3Vs yet; the same basic system is used in Ford's Zetec series four bangers though, and I've seen a lot of gummed up oil control solenoids and phasers sludged up from using anything thicker than 5W30 and/or lack of maintenance.
That's what I'd roll with. Change it regularly, try to avoid short trips without letting the engine get to operating temperature, and you should be fine as frog's hair.
