MPG increases

I have a 2001 F150 XLT
Im looking to increase the mpg's ( with the gas-price spike)
Ive seen several little gadgets and devices around the web, but would like to know if anyone has some info.
The device Im considering is this Fuel atomizer www.fuelconcepts.com
Of course I dont want to waste money if it doesnt work. Anyone have any other ideas for fuel conservation; other than the obvious ( driving slower, not stopping etc...)

There really isnt much you can do. Those products are usually alot of advertising and no results.

Also, most of them wont give you a very significant increase. Those products take a while to make up the cost in mileage increase.

It would seem to me that if any of those things actually worked they would be on the vehicle from the factory, with CAFE and all. Don't waste your money. Make sure the truck is properly tuned, the tires have the right air pressure, and keep your foot out of the gas.

Don't put any of that stuff in your truck. Maybe go with a Lucas Fuel injector cleaner and be senseable about the way you drive.

It Might not do much, But K&N Air Filters supposedly give you about 2MPG better.

Popular Mechanics did a test of several of the gimmick items & found that most of them decreased mileage & power. At best, all they did was take your money. This was in a Sept edition , I think. It may be a on their web-site also.

Mileage Increasers

I don't fully understand how an aftermarket air filter (or other devices in the intake system) could increase mileage on a computer controlled fuel injected engine. To my way of thinking, the computer in loop-back mode using the O2 sensor to control fuel would only inject the amount of fuel to match available O2. If the air filter is restrictive, it might have an effect at wide open throttle but no effect under other throttle positions. Is there something I am missing?

Mileage improvers that worked for me:
Slow down - people that get better mileage at 80 vs 55 mph have serious problems with their vehicles or serious problems with telling the truth. I know that someone who drives I 5 or I 95 is going to say they would get run over if they ran the speed limit. If a driver can't see something as big as an F-150, he's going to run over you anyway. Don't get me wrong, I don't advocate holding up traffic. I especially try to stay out of the way of people who obviously make their living in their vehicles, or those that are obviously mentally defective, even if it means kicking in passing gear to get out of the way . Enough soapbox.
Radial tires fully inflated vs bias plys
A strong tail wind - worth as much as 1 plus mpg
Drafting closely behind a big box 18 wheeler. This is very, very dangerous
Locking Gas Cap
Mileage improvers that did very little improving
Isky Mil-a-mor cam
Edelbrock variable water/alcohol injection system
Holley Economaster carb
Home made cold air induction system
Fan Clutch vs factory flex fan
Vacuum switch cut out for A/C clutch
Various true dual and single exhausts - I loved those long skinny glasspacs
Camper shell
Driver controlled MSD ignition advance (I liked this one because I could kill a spark knock or ping) I never got to use this with water injection, it might have helped.
As you may have guessed this was a while back. I had a nearly new '78 super cab, 302 w/165 hp, 4 sp overdrive manual trans. (had 275,000 mi when sold.) I installed an aftermarket trip computer with instant and average gas mileage readouts. It helped some because I could instantly see if I was getting my foot in too hard or if my latest gadget didn't work.
Most of this has little to do with our modern trucks except the fact there is little you can do mechanically to make a meaningful gain in mileage. Now or then. whew

I went from 14.1 to 17.2 MPG on my '05 Supercrew Lariat ALL CITY. It was really simple:
  1. Drive like an egg's under the gas pedal.
  2. Fold the mirrors in.
  3. Inflate the tires to 2 psi below the max tire pressure HOT.
  4. Pop A/T into neutral and coast to each stop light.

To me that's amazing. I'm sure if I get a bed cover it might actually increase a little more.

Well, it's not glamorous but it works! If you think about it, that's a 22% increase in gas mileage.
