BP Ultimate, Clear Gas, better perf.???
BP Ultimate, Clear Gas, better perf.???
Has anybody tried the 93 octane BP Ultimate, which is supposed to be the cleanest and clearest gas on the market and supposed to give you better performance? i know these engines only need 87, but for kicks i tried the bp ultimate, and i dont know if its all psychological, but I did feel my truck run quite smoother and accelerate better. has anybody tried it and seen the same results??
Not many BPs in this area. But if you dont have a tune that requires 93 then it is a waste to run it. If you thought it ran better, could be just from being better quality fuel then you were buying, but as far as it making it run better because it was 93 octane. Well, your wasting your money.
Now when I switch over to my 93 tune, I do notice a difference between Marathon and other fuels sold in this area. Marathon just seems to run a little smoother, which I contribute to better quality fuel.

I think he was trying to ask if the better quality of fuel (disregarding the octane rating) would be worth it.
Doesn't BP carry an 87 octane with the quality of the 93?
If its only the 93 i'd say maybe run it once a month or something to keep the injectors (and the rest of the fuel system) nice and clean. Or just run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. Either way.

When I was in Gulfport, Mississippi (yes -- it's true!) a couple of weeks back I wandered over to the Ford dealership that was next to my hotel to kill some time in the evening. I noticed that all the 2006 Expeditions on the lot had gas caps that specifically recommended the use of BP gasoline (?).
I thought this was an inventive marketing move on BP's part!

It is a marketing thing. All 06 Fords recomend BP fuel. It was a deal struck between Ford and BP to have that printed on the fuel caps.
It does not mean your Ford will run better on BP, only that Ford is being paid to recomend BP.

There is to be a new standard for fuels, tier one fuels etc. So Ford and BP struck a deal in advance of the new standards being announced.

BP Fuel is the way to go. It really depends on the station, but most of the BP's don't run ethenal (sp). Ethenal is not the best for the engine. The only fuel that I'll run in both my truck and my GTP is the BP Ultimate. If I run a different brand of gas or a different grade then both vehicles will not run as good and the mileage suffers. Hope this helps.

It probably doesn't...
Just goes to show the power of advertising. If the advertising suggests that you will feel better for spending the extra money on a "premium" product, human nature pretty much requires you to feel that way. If you don't, you'd have to admit to yourself that you were wrong and this is not something that our psyche will readily admit.
These engines were all designed to accept an ethanol blend. Nothing unpleasant will happen to your truck if you use it. Besides, using ethanol gives you the opportunity to subsidize American corn farmers by purchasing a very inefficient energy source thanks to government mandates.
Maybe BP paid for the Ford gascaps......

Well, I run nothing but 87 in my 01 4.6 but from my experience it seems to like the BP more than the other brands available here in my area. Not that there is a huge difference but I switched to BP when I noticed that it seemed to quite the pinging down. Not that it pings much on anything else but every now and again it would.
It could just be the stations around here or maybe a better quality 87. I have no idea. Bottom line is that it seems to like it better, it's the same price as everything else (sometimes a penny or two cheaper) and I have 3 stations near by so why not.
Is it worth the money to run the 93.... I say no. I tried for years to convice my dad of that when thats all he would run in his 91 (at a minimum 89) and thats all he would let me run in my 88 years ago. Finally I just started running the 87 anyway and one day he made a comment about how well my truck was running and I told him see you don't have to spend that extra 30-40 cents per gallon.
Well that ended up being longer than I intened but that is my $0.05 worth.

Like sleddog said, if your automobile isn't tuned to use the 93 (higher initial timing) then you will not realize any increase in performance. Only way you will really notice any gain is if your car has very high compression, and requires a higher octane rating, or you have increased timing. I run 18º initial advance on my protege and I can feel the difference between 87 and 91 (california only gets 91). I also run 91 in my truck to help prevent pinging/ detonation with the increased compression from the boost. On the flipside running a higher octane is "better" for you engine because supposedly it burns cleaner with less build-up and like others have stated it will help keep your injectors clean. The $.10 a gallon for mid-grade is probably a pretty good compromise for common fill-ups, with high-grade every-once-in-a-while.
