97 4.2 any way to tell whether its a blown head gasket or a cracked head?

i have water in my oil and its not firing on the back and middle cylinders
it runs rough and is even harder to start
i sent it to a shop for a timing cover gasket and they didnt tell me that it had water in the oil when they changed it

Put it this way. You know you have problem that requires the heads to be removed. That's the only way to find out what has happened.
Could be head gaskets, cracked head or block.
You have a decision to make....Houston!

Unhappy

Your lower intake gaskets have failed.Eventually, all 97-98 4.2V6s lower intake gaskets fail.Your bearings are probly toasted now. Go to the V6 forum and do a search on "lower intake gaskets".
