5.4 engine sounds

Hello to All,
See my sig for my rig specs... I have about 9k miles on her since I bought her new. I have had no problems with her at all. (sshhhh) But she does have a very slight diesel like sound at very low rpm's. Is this normal? I have read about the piston slap, but I am not sure if this pertains to the new 5.4 3v. Could it be lifter's tapping ect... I kind of like the sound, but not sure what to make of it. BTW I use Motorcraft 5w20 premium synthetic blend, with the motorcraft FL-820S valved oil filter. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I got a 4.2 v6 2005 f150 last week, and on my way home from work this morning I started to hear the same thing, a diesel like sound. I'm going to call my dealer later today (but the service center may be closed being sunday). I have no idea what it is. It has 170miles on it, had 30 when I picked it up. and I have not gone above 60.

Squink, what you might be experiencing is known as pinging, or detonation. Its when the fuel and air ignite before it is supposed to. Either way, it shouldn't be happening on a brand new truck, get it to the dealer before you have serious problems.

Interesting. I have the same sound on my 5.4. I thought it was coming from the cam followers. Are you sure the sound is made by the fuel injectors? I'm having problems visualizing a solenoid that small making a sound like that.

the new injectors on all 04+ are different thin walled so you year the solenoid alot more go to any dealership they will tell you... ud be amaised how common this complaint it. some customers we unplugged 4 injectors just to show them those are your injectors it is perfectly normal. but ford made the quiestest trucks now we heard stuff we never did before like engine tickts and rear end noises that u never heard before.

My new "05" 5.4 sounded like a diesel at low RPM's from the day I brought it home. When I first asked the dealer about it, I was told it was the injectors. But after taking a mechanic for a ride and letting him listen to it they found that the cam position sensors were both bad. After they replaced them the truck is nice and quite now.

The latest and greatest injectors Ford uses on these engines are pretty loud, relatively speaking, like Faster150 sez. Some noise from the VCT system isn't unusual either. Assuming it isn't raising all kinds of hell, like something's fixing to fly apart, I wouldn't worry about it. Stick with the oil and filter you got.

Having just bought my 05 Lariat Screw and hearing this noise as all seem to be, do you have anything to document this issue that we can take to our service reps? Scan or fax either way...thanks for the info!

ready for this ?? had the same noise on 2005 been in the shop for a week so far. there's a problem with the cam sensors that ford knows about. after tearing down the engine and replacing parts they put it back together and they're getting codes that the timing or something is out of wack. they torn it down again they found no problems. tomorrow (one week later) they are putting in the second main computer. I see a great deal for a 2006 in my future that ford will be chipping in for.

Weird, My 05 F-150 Lariat makes the same noise. Before I even noticed it the sales man told me all the 150's make that noise. i Wasnt so sure so he took me around the lot, aksed me to pick any five F-150s. he went and got the keys and started each one, sure enough they all did.
