coolant leak

I have had a leak the past couple days I found out it was coolant. I found where it was comming from and took a picture. If someone could explain to me what it is that is leaking and how to fix it that would be great. There is also a picture showing how much coolant I lost in about 4 hours. The links to the pics are below. The pics are taken from behind the wheel on passenger side. The leak is at the spot where it looks like a tub comes out and stops and around the gasket around that tub.

Most likely a bad heater core.

The heater core is on the passenger side but it usually leaks into the cab floor. It could be that someone got against a heater hose and cracked the neck where it goes into the core. Turn your defroster on hot and if you get a sweet damp smell and condensation on the windshield, it's the heater core.

Speaking of heater cores is there any easy way to change them? I've been getting a sweet whiff of coolant every so often and the last time that happened (on the 97) it was $750 fawking dollars and 3 days in the shop! I'd like to avoid that if possible. TIA

yep I got that sweet smell. I am trying to find posts online for instructions on how to change it. I have come across several people that have this problem so far. I'll see what I can find.
