If You Don't Do Your Own Maintenance -- You're Nuts!

I had to take my "daily driver" Pontiac Sunfire into my local Quick-Lube place for an oil change today. My company will only reimburse me for maintenance that is performed by "professional" shops, so I can't change my own oil on this vehicle.

I had to endure the "Your so-and-so needs replacing and so-and-so preventative maintenance is required at this mileage...." routine, which is always one of the most annoying aspects of going to these places. It was also the oil change (every 5th one for me) where I stop by Wal-Mart on the way home and pick-up a new air filter for the car.

So when I get home and go to install it this evening, here is how I found the air filter re-installed in my vehicle:

Can you ****** believe it?! What a-holes!

If any of you are too lazy to crawl underneath your ride to do your own preventative maintenance, take a good look at this picture! In all honesty, I'm not THAT upset because, quite frankly, I hate the Sunfire and really see it as nothing more than cheap transportation. But c'mon fellas -- have at least A LITTLE pride in how you earn your $7.50 per hour!

Thank God my F-150 will never see the inside of one of these places!

The only way this happens is if "$7.50 Per Hour Guy" says, "Screw it!", doubles the filter over, and stuffs it in the air box!

Yeah i felt the same way- did my first couple of oil changes myself. The last one here i took it to the local ford dealer and they are doing it for $22 with the motorcraft oil and filter. so i cant really afford to do it myself. And they are a small shop in a small town so they cant afford to be messing things up. And he took lots of time doing it. i was waiting awhile so he must have actually given it the full inspection they say they do, lol.

I would stay away from those "quick lube" places- they are more interested in the quick than the lube and they use cheaper oil and filter.

Dan.

F..Ford service is not so hot, I am...had my oil change to day, up and to now service has been great and I ignored that inner voice telling me to check under the hood the hood....as I'm driving 10 min down the road, thiers god awful smell and smoke is pouring out my hood.....

Cap for my brake fluid was missing... took my T-shirt ( was dirty from work ) to use as a cap, and headed back...to the dealer....and fought with the service manager for a brake flush, engine shampo and a cap.. and a ford motorsport's T-shirt..dealer was clossing in five minutes and I was not leaving.....hour and half later I was on my way....

you can clearly see the brake fluid level with out taking off the cap...

On the bright side, the filter should last forever like that. Hard to get it dirty when the air doesn't go through it.

This is a great post man, let people know because I think a lot of people, probably most do just take their stuff to a place and have them do it. I for one would never trust any place unless I knew them personally very well. Ive got an auto hobby shop available to me with lift and all the other toys like pneumatic tools, everything so I never even think about letting someone else do sh*t to my truck. But even if I didnt have such ammenities Id still get underneath the thing to drain it and change the filter if I had to.

I very rarely if ever take any of my vehicles in for service. When I do I dread it, they always manage to F*.*k something up. Years ago I had to bring in a van for warranty work, leaking oil pan gasket E-150 (BTW it took 3 times to finally fix it). I took it in they determined where the leak was coming from and told me to bring it back the following week that they were too busy to do it.

I agreed and noticed an $8 tire rotation special, and asked if they could do that when I came back the next week. No problem the service writer said, so I decided to mark the tires in a way that would not be noticed.

I took the van back had the service writer write me up and do the $8 tire rotation. I came home checked and nothing was done to the tires, I called and asked, giving the benefit or the doubt that maybe they forgot. He swore up and down that his tech did the job. When I told him I marked the tires he felt like an a-hole and told me to bring it back in for the rotation. I said no thanks give me my money back.

Its really a shame that its hard to find someone you can trust and have them work on your car. After spending 3+ years selling cars and working at different dealerships, I decided to do what ever possible myself to my vehicles.

Thats total BS. I would have some words with them.

That is also a reason I NEVER take my truck anywhere for maintanence. Always do everything myself, unless its something like an alignment that is impossible to do by yourself. I dread taking it to a shop and leaving it though.

My truck actually is in a shop to get aligned, and it needs new ball joints too. Im worried shatless(it needs to be there a couple days) but the mechanic is a very good guy who we have personally known for YEARS.

I have an 05 F250 work truck. The company pays for the maintenance.
I always go to the same place for service.
I always stay right there and watch what they do.
I always tease, poke, and cut up with them.
If it's morning, I occasionally bring them a biscuit.
I always stay right there and watch what they do. Redundant, I know.
I had great service on the 93, the 96, the 00, and now this one.
That personal driver, 05 F150? Well I do it myself, and better.
