Need help with hot blooded engine
I am posting in this engine forum as it has the most activity. The setup I have is a V6 Sport Trac. Standard with trans cooler.
Problem: When in stop and go (or just plain stop) traffic, and the AC on, after a few minutes, the AC cuts off (blower continues, but with only hot air). And the temp gauge goes up to about 7/8 on the dial. It never goes beyond the upper limit of the black zone into the red. After I get rolling again, the transmission jolts into second gear, and it's a rough gear change. A little smoother after that transition. After rolling a bit, the temp comes down, the trans shifts normally and the AC starts with cool air again. So, I can't sit in traffic with the AC like everyone else. The truck has 75k on it. It had a trans fluid flush and fill as well as a coolant flush and fill about 25k ago. Fluids look great and are at the correct level.
I assume the higher temp is sending the computer into a "hot" mode? Transmission shop guy thought that and said to change the thermostat. I had that done, and it still has a problem. The fan runs while at idle okay. Doesn't seem to freespin or bind when spun by hand, it does have some resistance. While moving, truck is normal all the way. The engine doesn't look like it will cool down by itself at idle with the AC off and the fan running. I have to get it rolling to bring the gauge down.
What next? I don't want to continue throwing money at something. Can the fan clutch work "halfway"? In other words, can it look like it's doing the job but yet not be operating normally?
Any help is appreciated here.

fan clutch
the fan clutch will wear out at that milage.it at times will go out later it is time not miles.a heating problem at a stop or slow speed is all times air flow.the fan clutch will be my best guess.thes will start some trouble but ford does make the best fan clutch.if you would like to get the same serverce from you next one.by ford.
