Get an Extended Warranty
Get an Extended Warranty
Well my 2001 F-150 was in the shop this week. Generally I like this truck a lot. But my advice is to get an extended warranty on any American made product. Over the last year, I've replace the fuel pump ($750), and idler arm, left ball joint, numerous emissions pieces, oil pan gasket . . the sum cost of which has certainly exceeded the cost of the warranty. And this truck only has 50M miles on it. The only thing I can say is that it is better than my '94 Ford. Torque converter, rear main seal, rear axle seals (and therefore brakes), rusted through oil pan, 4x4 front hubs, all at $1,000 a pop. Had a Chevy truck which was a complete disaster. It's really sad and makes you start to think about Toyota or Nissan. And I know they have their issues too but I've never had this level of repair expense with my cars; Audi, BMW, Toyota, VW, etc.
I hear ya! I practically had the local dealership rebuild my '95 within the first three years I owned it! They saw my truck more than I did! It had a bad clutch from the factory and was replaced @ 1200 miles. I went through several front rotors & brake pad sets before 12000 miles when the dealer finally installed the new kevlar pads on it. The ignition switch went bad, tranny problems, ABS sensor, new computer module, you name it, it went bad under warranty. Thank Gawd for the warranty! I'd have paid a fortune for it otherwise!
Similarly, I bought the super ultra duty highest coverage Platinum warranty when I bought my '02 Chrysler 300M. Car's got 15 computers - computers running computers! No way I'm gonna get stuck paying to replace them! Already had new front end suspension and transmission replaced before 60000 miles. Extended warranty paid for itself in spades!

Sister has a 2001 Honda Odyssey. Thank God for her extended warranty. Transmission replaced at 65K and then a $500 sensor at around 70K. Any man made machine can/will fail. Not just American.
