It worked for my Harley!

First off hi great site, I just bought a 2001 XLT 150 5.4 355 rear end auto SCSB 4x4. This is the first 150+auto I have had in many years. (just traded my 2000 PSD SCSB 6 speed 4x4 for a 2005 class C V10 and my 2000 ranger 3.0 5 speed for this 150) what I would like to do is get more performance and better mpg. I didn't do any mods on my last two trucks other than drop in KN filters but have a lot of experiance with getting performance out of my cycles by doing pipes, carbs, ignition, wires etc. My current ride 91FXRS only got 38 mpg and wasn't that quick when I bought it. Now I get 55 mpg and you better have a big inch bike if you want to play. What do you experts recomend for me to start with to get the same results? K&N cold air system? Exhast? ignition? What brands seem to do the best and what kinda $$ we talking? I have around a $1,000.00 that my bride (Broom hilda) don't know about. All advise is wellcome and will be concidered. Thanks in advance. Scotty.

XCAL2 should be the first thing, then maybe underdrives, Airforce one intake, and an exhaust system

Scotty, from your post and expectations about the new trucks, to make it short "it ain't going to happen" like your use to.
I think if I were you I would have bought a new PSD instead of the V10 for power and mileage considerations.
A reprogrammer on the PSD would get you way more performance than a gas motor, for the money.
Know that the 4.6 is only 281 cu/in pushing close to 6000 lbs. A 5.4 is only 330 and a v10 while much larger may get you more power but certinaly not the fuel milage (I think you think you should be able to get).
The new 5.4 3 valve engine responds very well to one make of aftermarket intake air system and to reprogramming and could get upwards of 360 hp +/- if that would be in the acceptable range but the mileage still won't be very good depending on what you call good.. Exhaust systems don't add very much for regular driving use for their cost.
Don't hear much about the v10 on this board forum.

I think he is talking about for his 01 150. The Xcal 2 is a superchips programmer. Go to the supporting vendors link at the top of the page and click on troyer performance, give them a call, or you can go to the chips programmer thread and look for superchips distributor and search for all the info you could ever possibly need on the Xcal 2, and others for that matter. Plus Mike Troyer with Troyer performance will help you with any other mods you want to do to. Hope this helps you out and welcome to the site

I have no illusions of great gas milage, just wondering if I could duplicate what I have done with my bikes( increase performance and milage) The diesel was easy the V10 is pulling a hell of a lot more weight than my PSD did and seems to be doing around 9mpg thats good in my book the diesel was around 12. The 150 is getting 15 all around and I was hoping to better that as it is my dayly driver. Plus it is fun to play. Thanks. Scotty

Thanks jjmIII I will check it out. And don't be pickin on old Blue he just don't finish readin before he start talkin. I had a 5.4 in an early (Feb. 98) 99 f250 4x4 SC SD. that I couldn't keep rotors on. Ford bought it back so I never got to play with the mods. This 150 seems like it has a lot of potential to get breathing better. The motor home is a E-450 V10 and will prob. not get molested (well maybe a K&N) but thats it, and I mean it this time! This is gonna be a fun site. Scotty.

Most of his comments are CORRECT...

In any case, your best bet for performance/mileage on these trucks is the chip/tuner, and I would also do efans. Pretty much everything after that is just for looks or sound.

I Agree with Johngs;

Don't you be dissin' Bluegrass - he tells it like it is - no BS, has a LOT of experience (has probably forgotten more than most of us will ever know), and has always helped folks out. What to some may appear condescending is in reality just a candid disclosure of the facts, without the flowery language.

Some respect is in order. Clear?

To the new guy - Welcome! Sorry to say, I prefer rice rockets - my VFR (slightly not stock), sucks the headlight out of my brother-in-laws V-Rod, on a routine basis And doesn't drip oil doing it.

As for your truck - Xcal2 custom tuner, AF1 intake, 3" SISO catback ( not Fartmaster), underdrives & e-fans, in that order. That'll polish off your $1,000. Then go get some 4.10's This, of course, is just my humble opinion.

Lookie here - search for Staged performance combos...

Cheers!

Not true. Bluegrass knows his stuff and is usually quite helpful. Tone is hard to get over the internet.

Talking

I'm not sure why I even bothered to mention it.
I'm sure he's an OK guy, and I never said he didn't know what he was talking about.

I have noticed however that he seems to take a strange tone in his replies, often a condescending one.
Thats why people ask questions, because they don't know the answers.

I truly apologize for not just minding my own business.
This is a great place.
