2001 F150 5.4 engine cut out

Sup All
I have a 2001 f150 supercrew with the 5.4 motor. Sometime ago the engine would cut out just for a second. This would usually happen when I was on the highway doing around 70 mph. I took it to the dealership and they could not find anything. Well I decided to do a little maintance. Oil change and air filter change out. After changing the air filter it stopped doing it. This was around 18000 miles. The air filter did not look dirty at all.

Well it happened to me again about a month ago. 29000 miles. I decided to try the air filter trick again. It seemed to work for about 1000 miles. The cut out has come back again though.

Like I said. Almost all the time that it happens I am doing around 70 mph. I did do some research here and found a few things to check.

Any ideas what it could be? Thanks in advance

By cut out do you mean turn off? My previous vehical was a 95 crown vic with the 4.6 and it did that to me once... after a lot of research i found out that its not uncommon for it to happen once or twice.. or even 3 times in the life of a small percent of crown vics, so i assume the 5.4 is affected too. Ford has no idea what it is because its so rare, and neither does anyone i talked to about it.

However what you're describing sounds alot more common than that, and I'd be concerned.

ETA: and mine cut out doing about 70 on the freeway going up a slight hill.

Thanks for the response.

It does not turn off. It is like it just goes dead for 1 second. There is nothing consistent about it. Sometimes it will do it 2 or 3 times in 20 miles sometimes I might not do it for quite sometime. Like after the first time I changed the air filter. It did not do it for 8 to 10 months. It has done it one time scence this filter change in about a month.

Thanks Again.

Sounds like MAF issues. I had a car that would do that on the highway, I would coast to the shoulder and it would recover. Sometimes I would just let up on the gas and slowly give it throttle and it would work again. I tool it to the stealership and they replaced the MAF sensor and everything worked great from that point on.

yeh i was gonna say sounds like a MAF issue to me... u can clean MAF's with either some electrical contact cleaner or rubbing alcohol. i think someone has a good post on the procedure on how to do that

Thanks for the replies all.

Ok not to sound stupid but what is maf?

Also when it happens it is only for a split second on on on on on off on on on on on and so on hehe. No restarting involved or pulling over to the side of the road.

Again Thanks for the response.
