v6 to v8

I have a 1998 blown v6 engine and I would like to put a v8 in it. First of all can I do it and if so what do I need to know and how much of a pain is it going to be.

Thumbs up

It can be done, but....... It is a major pain in the butt. you will need a working knowlodge of ford V8s and a good deal of specilty tools (it will go MUCH easer if you have the specilty tools but it can be done with standard automotive tools). The basic items you will need are a new engine, of course, transmission, V6 has diffrent bolt pattern than V8, New PCM, wiring harness for V8, V8 raditor, and I highly recomend going with all new sensors, it is more expensive but will save you a LOT of trouble in the long run. I work for a shop and we have swiched out a lot of motors including an F-150 and it rates about a 8.5 on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being hardest) just becouse you are going from a V6 to V8. Have a detaild instruction manual, call ford and get a factory assembly manual. If you have the money I would pay a shop to do it. but if you have the experance and time it can be done.

If you can find it gt the motor with its matching tranny. Ie: a scrapped F-150 with the motor allready attached. If you get the motor make sure you get the engine/tranny and PCM harness that goes with it. They are expensive to purchase seperate. You will of coarse need the PCM for the V8 that you choose. If you are electrically challenged find someone who is not. As mentionned you will need the Shop manual including the EVTM (Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual) so you can test and fix the wiring. Pulling the old and installing the new Engine/tranny is not that hard. In 1999 Ford started using PATS (Passive Anti Theft System) on the trucks. Your 98 most likely doesn't have it. If possible get wire harnesses from vehicles that are from the 97-98 model year. So the biggest obsticle is the wiring. One last thing is the driveshaft length. I am not sure so I will not speculate but you may need to get that too.
