It was 6 qts on the pre-04 trucks, Im not sure if it stayed the same on the 04-05 trucks...the engine is the same though so I assume the amount of oil is too.

It should be in your manual, in mine there are a bunch of tables in the back that list the amount of fluids everything requires...

Speeking of oil, I have a 98 F-150 with the 4.6 in it and it seems to be using up alot of oil. I dont any hot roding in it or anything and i still have to add a quart of oil every month to a month and a half. Dose this seem normal?

Thanks,
Justin

No!!, My 98 4.6 would even blow clouds of blue smoke when you started it after it sat. When I would change my oil at 5,000 it was still full.

how many miles?? sounds like ur rings are leaking... might think about a rebuild. my trucks got 127,000 and its been through alot and ive never needed to add oil.

It depends. Ford says that something like up to 1 qt per 900 miles is normal in these trucks. Which is a load of crap.

But to really tell you if you have a serious problem, how many miles would you say you drive in that time period? For me personally, I would say 1 qt per 3000 miles is acceptable, more than that and I would start trying to find the problem and fix it.

The book on my 4.6L says 6 qts. That puts the level dead in the middle between FULL and ADD on the dip stick.

Ford still claims using 1 qt every 900 miles is OK. That's a tad excessive for my taste. My old 4.6L didn't start to burn oil until it hit 110K, and then it was only 1/2 - 3/4 qt every 3000 miles. That kind of oil use I can accept.

I have 100k miles on it and I drive anywhere between 4000 to 5000 miles a month. The pervious owner let the oil level run low enough to blow it up so he replaced it and now has around 50,000 miles that I put on it. So from what yall are telling me this should be about normal?

Thanks for the help
Justin

If you are adding a quart per 4-5k miles, I wouldnt worry about it.

Not really. You'll notice this more if you drive mostly highway miles, but all modern engines use low tension piston rings for less friction, to promote better fuel economy.

How do you figure that highway miles contributes to higher oil consumption than city driving?
