4.6 PERFORMANCE HEADS & HEADERS

Where do I look for upgraded heads ( 4 valve ) ? I am looking for an easy bolt on to match my wrenching ability.
Does any body have any experience with long tube headers for this vintage truck?
All suggestions are appreciated.

ONELOWF,
4 valve heads is not an easy bolt on, they uses a different intake and completly different computer to run, especially the early Cobra heads. They will also push the CR way low with your stock pistons.
You are better off with ported and polished heads. The head install itself is not an easy bolt on but doable.
Good luck.

Everytime I've asked about performance heads for the 4.6l motor Fox Lake's Name always comes up. I was going to have them do the work for my last truck.

But like mentioned, DOHC wouldn't be an easy bolt-on. I'd just see about getting your current heads reworked aswell as possibly upgrading to the PI heads. Can check some mustang webpage to see about finding some used ones cheap and then just sending to fox lake for rebuilding.

Link to their mod motor cylinder head page... Hope this works:

yeh switch to 4v heads is so much work... cheaper just to swap a new motor in. but fox lake heads or have ur stockers machined is ur better option u will see in some cases better gains over some stock 4v heads.. and wont hvae to deal with more moving parts to break in due time...

I agree, a four valve conversion would cost more than a new 4 valve motor. Go with some ported PI heads ( and a new PI intake ) or beter yet Ford Racing makes a performance head for none PI motors that would be a direct swap but they are alittle pricey.

Also just rememebered I think the PI heads also have a little bit of a smaller chamber so you'd also get a boost from a great compression ration w/ the PI heads.

Believe you'll need a Dyno tune if you go w/ PI heads though.

yeh i beleive so the ECU's for the non pi's are different. when i first got my chip it had a tune on it for a 01 PI 4.6l and man it barely idled lol so there is a definate difference between the tunes on the PI and non PI engines

Thanx,

The 4 valve thing was a real brain fart......
I am going to check our neighborhood for a shop to port & polish, etc. the stockers ..... seems the most resonable for this little truck.
