What 4.6 would you use?

I am replacing the motor in my 1997 F-150. I am sticknng with the 4.6, but I am wondering what one you guys would go for.

From what I can gather I have the "Romeo" 4.6, and was wondering what other 4.6's would give me more power. I am looking into a 2001 + 4.6 from a F-150 but what else is out there?

Use the DOHC 4.6L engine from the Cobras. The only problem is that they make their power at high RPM.

Getting one with PI heads will give you more power in stock form like the 01. I don't think there is a power difference b/t the Romeo and the Windsor motor though.

Can also check out the crate motors performance shops sell.

infinatenexus,
You can't really use the 32 valve engine without quite a bit of modification. If you put in a PI engine then it will have more power then the Non-PI engine you have now, probably 35-40HP and since that is to the rear wheels, it is a definite seat of the pants improvement. You just have to switch over to your ignition set-up (remove COP and use your duel coil/plug wires).

Are you sure you have a Romeo engine? Most of the 97 trucks had Windsor. Look at the VIN deciphering tool on this web site and see if you have a W or a 2 for the engine code. Believe it or not, the 2 is for the Windsor and the W is for the Romeo. The difference is the Windsor will probably have an 8 bolt crank and the Romeo a 6 bolt crank. You can change them but will have to change out the flex plate for the torque converter.

I watch ebay quite a bit and have found most of the late model 4.6 truck engines for sale there have the 6 bolt crank.

You can also contact Karkraft They usually have a good selection of crate engines.

I'll check again, but I do think its a Romeo. I have found a couple low mileage motors in South Florida, I guess I'll take a day off work and pick one up next week.

Thank you for all your help.

I thought about the aviator motor, but they are a bit out of my price range.
