Which Engine?

Hi All,

Here is my dilemma. I am ready to purchase an ‘05 Supercrew. I have one all picked out, with exactly the bells and whistles that I want. (XLT, 2-tone captains chairs, 6-disk MP3, power driver's seat, and bed extender) My only concern is that it only has the 4.6L. The truck will most likely never tow anything in its life. Would the 5.4 make much sense? I have been searching inventories around the state, and I'm not finding the right truck with a 5.4.

I see the differences on paper, but would I feel much difference in acceleration with the larger engine? I guess that is what I am really getting at. I drove both today, and did not feel much difference.

If you drove both and didt notice much difference then you kinda answered your own questiong.

If your not going to tow anything, the 4.6 is a fine engine.

If you think there isnt enough difference to tell, might as well go with the 4.6, save some money, and get the truck you want.

If you're not goign to tow anything and aren't worried about trying to beat hemis light to light, then get the 4.6l engine. It's a good strong engine and if you ever have to tow anything in the future, it'll still get the job done. Plus that truck seems to have the options you want. The 4.6l engine will probably see better gas mileage on the interstate, probably the city too over the 5.4l

With the umpteen gazillion configurations the F-150 comes in, it's hard to believe you can't find the truck you saw with a 5.4L. The 4.6L is a smooth little V8 that could do some towing, but nothing too heavy. As an owner of an '03 Supercrew with a 5.4L, and a driver of a business van with the 4.6L ('05 model), I'm a firm believer in the 5.4L. This engine does make a difference. Hope you enjoy your new truck. Welcome to the forum!

I had a heck of a time finding my 05 in the configuration I wanted. The few others I found always had stupid little options stuck on there or they were one of the couple of colors I did not want at all.

But, if he's just scooting around town and isn't one of the people who is going to complain about a Dodge Hemi beating him in a race or tows a big trailer. The 4.6l is more than enough. Plus, my 4.6l got better gas mileage than I'm experiencing with my new 5.4l engine.

I guess I am fairly picky with the options. I don't want to pay for stuff I don't want. The biggest problem is finding them with the electric driver's seat. I have it in my car that I am trading in, and I don't think I can live without it. I have sifted through hundreds of SCrews in a ~200 mile radius via ford's web page. I appreciate the feedback. I am going to stick with the 4.6L. I'm really glad this board exists. All of my questions have been answered just by searching the forums!

Thanks guys... looking forward to getting my truck Monday!

The 4.6L is a fine engine that will do you well. Before getting my diesel, dads 97 has pulled some mighty big trailers and can leave 5.4Ls behind. Course it's a five speed, but still, one nice engine. Ford hit a home run with the tritons.

There are not a lot of new '05 Super Crews left out there. I had a similar problem locating the exact truck I wanted. It was nearly impossible to find one in True Blue with Captains Chairs and the MP3 player. My dealer finally found one on the other side of the country. They paid $900 to ship it out here just so I could test drive it. Now, that's service! If you wait for a few months, you should have no problem getting an '06 with everything you want.

I'm a big fan of the 4.6L. It's reliable and offers good fuel economy (especially on the highway). It'll also handle towing just about anything you want. It's a little slow getting up to 45 MPH, but most of us can live with that. I do think 4.6L is a tad under powered for the Super Crew, but it performs well enough.

Get the 5.4L V8. It’s better to have it and not need it than it need it and not have it. There are so many F150s on sale right now, if you spend a little more time, I’m sure you will find the configuration you want plus the 5.4L for just a little more.

My 04' FX4 Screw 4x4 with the 5.4L is still a pig, and slow as one, I can't even imagine how slow it would be with the 4.6L. Even with the 5.4L, you better forget about Hemis and Titans, because you won't stand a chance unless they are quadcab 4x4s and you are driving a single cab 4x2!

Also, the 5.4L doesn't have to work as hard than the 4.6L, so there shouldn't be too much of a fuel economy difference between the two.

I agree with going with the bigger engine. If you are buying new and signing up for monthly car payments anyway, why not spend the extra $25/month to have the best?

I have 2 friends with the 4.6 in the new chassis and they just hate the lack of power. They had 4.6's before but seemed to go much better in the 97-03 trucks. I guess thats the weight issue on the new trucks.

You might want to also consider resale value. The 5.4L will obviously get more but you will need to weigh the pro's and con's.

As for my $.02 about the 5.4 I love it in my King Ranch Screw. It is a big truck and the 5.4 hauls it around like its nothing.

Good luck.

I appreciate the advice. I just returned home with my new truck. I went ahead with the 4.6L I had picked out. At least for readers in the future, I am very happy with the power so far. I just drove 150+ miles through 2 towns, 2 cities, and lots of interstate in between. So far, I am extremely satisfied with the amount of power. It rides like a champ, and had no power passing or manuvering. I got a good deal with the Family Plan pricing as well. Doing the math, it was over 27% off sticker.

to amend my above comment, I meant to type "no problem with power passing..."

Again... love the power.. no problems passing!

Congrats on getting your truck. I'm pleased to see that you're happy with it. 27% off the sticker with the Family Plan is pretty damn good savings! Boy, I'll tell ya, it is ever so tempting when I drive by the Ford dealers in my area. And it's pure torture, because this area is like 4 big towns lined up about 5-10 miles apart. ALL the Ford dealers are located on the same main drag thru these towns. I've seen some fantastically stunning new 05's on these lots that get my testosterone going like a pressure cooker, expecially the King Ranches. But I have to pay off my '03 so my wife can get her a new car. And I'm still upside down on the loan for the moment. I can't do the trade in, man. I promised her, and she means more to me than any truck. So, when it's paid off I'm keeping the truck and getting her a new car without a trade in.
