Removing COPs

I have an intermittent misfire on cylinder 7, and I want to replace that COP to see if it cures the problem.

The fuel rail seem to run right over the top of that one, do I have to remove that also, or can I wiggle the COP out past it?

If I have to take off the fuel rail, what is the procedure?

Thanks!

Pretty easy task

Once you remove the screw, it will "wiggle" past the fuel rails fairly easily.

There are 2 screws that hold the fuel rail in place. Remove the 2 screws (the rear one is a little tough to get to) then pull straight up on the rail. Some or all of the injectors may come out along with the fuel rail. No biggie though. The ones you have to worry about are the ones that remain in the head. You must verify that the o-ring is still on the top of the fuel injector. If not, it means that the o-rings is still on the fuel rail. If this happens, use a thin screwdriver and fish the o-ring out of the rail. Slide the o-ring back onto the injector then push the injector back into the head. When you put the rail back on, align all of the injectors into the head and or rail, then firmly push down on the rail over each injector. You will feel a slight pop as each one is pushed back into place. Finally, put the 2 screws back in place. Should take you about 20 minutes to take off and put back on.

If you remove the rail using a little dab of engine oil on the O rings makes them slip back into the rail easier.

If you have the 5.4L you can remove each and every one of the COP's & spark plugs without removing the fuel rails, trust me I have done it myself. It may look a liitle tricky but once you get in there and get to work it really isn't so bad, it is just a little tight and requires some...OK.... A LOT of patience.
Good luck,

Brian
