What is this? (picture)

I have a 2000 F150 5.4L with 63,000 on it. This is a picture of my transmission pan (I think) from underneath my truck. As you can see the rubber type of plug is leaking (oil?). Does anyone know what this is or how to fix it?

Thanks a lot,

Brian

Won't work trying to view stuff off your desktop...gotta upload it to a gallery or a host site like Photobucket and then use the IMG tags. By your description, it sounds like the transmission front pump seal may be leaking.

Thats your torque converter plug...

How much is it leaking? Keep an eye on your transmission fluid level.

I'm looking at this on my desktop and it looks like "oil", not "tranny fluid"(notice how the flow seems to be from the engine back to the inspection plug on your bellhousing). The culprit is in all likely hood a rear main seal and/or rear main seal cover plate gasket. It doesn't appear to be tranny fluid but to truly know you are going to have to pull the tranny. You then will be able to see the residual oil around the rear main and the rear main cover plate, if that is in fact your problem as it appears to be. From my view point this is your problem... and it is a lot of work for a $20 dollar gasket (yes!!! spend the $20 on a good Timken seal... don't buy the $8 Felpro you'll regret it later .....just speaking from experience) so that being said, unless you are having to check your gas and fill up your oil every day then I wouldn't bother just yet because it is a PITA. If you are using a quart/week I would start looking to do the work or have it done. From the looks of it you are approaching that point.

Or rear main seal. I would just watch it awhile and make sure it doesn't get worse. If it does get worse the trans will have to be pulled to change either seal, but change both (trans front seal and rear engine main seal) while you are in there.

That plug is just and inspection plug (and access torque converter drain plug)to keep dust out.

Could be rear main seal. It can leak down into the bell housing also. you need to see if it is trans fluid or eng. oil. Either way, the tranny will probably have to come out to fix.

The picture wasn't there when I posted.

Is this centrally located around the converter inspection plug? No oil on either sides of the bellhousing where the bellhousing meets the block? Not to cause a panic, but oil leaks from the head gaskets can manifest themselves like that as well, but they leave traces on the side of the block at the rear of the heads as well.

Before you assume its the rear main or tranny seal pull the plug and see if its wet inside. The infamous head leak lets the oil run down and it forms on the lowest spot before it drips off. My TC plug is wet from my head leaking.

X2 The rubber plug can be removed and checked that just seals the inspection port. It doesn't seal the torque converter or tranny and should be dry.

Thanks for all of the replies so far. I noticed this while changing my oil recently. I just bought this truck about a month ago so I don't know how much oil it is using yet. It does not leak enough to even leave a spot on the driveway yet but I was concerned when I seen the oil marks on the tranny pan.

By looking at that pic I have to go with lees99f150 on that one, it sure looks like that starter is covered with oil as well leading me to believe that the head is leaking, and I'll almost bet that the truck has a Romeo engine in it

The build tag on one of the vavle covers will have an REP on it which means Romeo Engine Plant

Alright, I pried the rubber plug out of there and it looks as if the oil is leaking from inside of that rubber plug. It is wet inside of there. How could I stop the leak? Also, once the leak is taken care of how do I get that rubber plug back in?

Thanks

Brian
