4.6L to 5.4L on 4X4 - Need ASAP!
Look inside the white square. That is the valve. I removed it from my 4.6 intake and bolted it to the top intake manifold. The PCM still opens it as it is still pluged it. The vane will move but it is there just to keep the PCM from setting a code.

If you are wondering what the IMRC does and how it works, check this out. It sounds more like an IMT to me since the 4.6 and 5.4 don't have 2 runners to each cylinder.

Now here is the problem. The 4.6L is screwed into the block. There is no hole or anything for it. The 5.4L has a bolt going through it. The 4.6L sensor is bigger than the bolt from the 5.4L, and you can't put a big sensor in a small hole.
Let me know if this helps. I'm still stuck on the swap.
Thanks very much..
The new 5.4L is getting ready to go in as soon as I figure that out.

Sorry 'but the delay in getting back.
Ok the 5.4 Sensor has 3 wires. One is a ground ant the other two do the same job as the 4.6 sensor. Should be a yellow with red stripe wire on the 4.6 connector and the same color on the 5.4 sensor. They go together. There should also be a grey with red stripe wire on the 4.6 connector. This would match to the dark green with purple stripe wire. The remaining wire on the 5.4 sensor is a ground so go ahead and ground it. By the looks of the wiring you have a 97-98 5.4 engine.

Thanks for all the help.
I forgot to post, but the truck started up two weeks ago.
Its running of the fuel maps in the computer, I don't have the O2 sensors connected yet. LOL. I have a question though, there is a sensor in the front of the intake manifold, do you know what it is? I'm pretty sure its the air temp sensor. There were two of them on the 4.6L intake, but there is only one of them on the 5.4L intake. What gives? Is it just for the guage?
Thanks alot for you help.

ooh nice. thx for bumping. im putting it in the fav list. i got a 2002 5.4L on the way to get a new piston ring rod n bearing job, plus im lookin at fox lake heads with either crane or comp cam. all going into a 97 f150 4x4 with 4.6 stock. good to see what i need to do and watch for.
this is going to be so hard for me lol...
im doing it all myself in my back yard and first time pulling a motor...
i just wana get the motor out this weekend then go motor hunting... my motors blown so pulling it is the start sence i cant drive it...

I would recommend leaving the engine in place. This will keep all the accessories in their proper place. When you have the new engine and time comes to pull it you will have just removed them and the memory of how they were taken off will still be fresh.

One of the things I used to do many years ago, when getting into stuff hard and heavy like this, was to set up a video camera on a tripod and record the whole thing. Put it up high enough where it can see somwhat down into the engine compartment, but back far enough where you won't knock it over.
You would be surpised how much that helps. Loose something? Watch the tape to see where YOU put it. Forget something? Watch the tape to see how it came off.
Very handy.

Just finished my swap!
Hope this info helps: I just finished putting an 02 5.4 into my 97 that used to have a 4.6. it is also a 4x4 auto. Here are a few items i found: the knock sensor on the 5.4 had only two wires so i just clipped the connector and spliced it back. The oil sending unit wire did no no need to be lengthened, it fit perfectly. The wiring harness was so tight on the passenger side that i had to extend the a/c clutch connector. my 4.6 was a windsor so the flexplate fit right. If you have a romeo motor, it will have 6 bolts and you will have to get a new(to you) flexplate and 8 new bolts(or maybe just 2).Serp belt fit perfect. Made coil bracket for pass side out of metal strap. no problems. Exhaust manifold on the 5.4 was TWICE the width out from the surface of the head, so i wound up having to take the steering box off to remove the shaft to get clearance, about ten minutes extra work. I left the p/s presure hose on the pump, pulled the motor with p/s pump on it, then put the pump and hose on the 5.4. one thing i would have done different was pulled the trans dipstick and drained some fluid, becasue the passenger side manifold studs hung on the pipe and made it a little tough to get it in and i didn't see that it was hung.(dummy me!). One other word of advice, test your injectors if you are using the ones on a donor motor before you put intake back on( you do need to remove the intake for the swap inand out, at least thats the only way i know to do it). When i started it, the #6 injector was bad, luckily the 4.6 uses the same injectors, easy swap. Took it to the exhaust place, had down pipes fabbed up, uploade TROYER tunes, voila! now it breaks the tires loose easy!
